Nala didn't find out till it was too late that she hadn't dug the hole properly, digging far more than necessary out of her side, and not enough out of the other side.

The result of this was that while it was quite easy to get down into the hole, when Nala tried to get up the other side to freedom, she just managed to slip her shoulders through the hole before her belly, wedged against lip of the hole, halting her progress.

No matter how much Nala struggled she couldn't move an inch forward, and as she quickly discovered, she couldn't get enough grip to reverse, and even turning over proved to be impossible, like it or not, she was stuck fast.

Soon Nala was feeling drowsy, and despite her extremely uncomfortable position, fell asleep, and so failed to hear the approaching figure.
