Nala and Scar may not have ruled well, from an outsider's perspective, but the only perspective the couple cared about was their own, and they thought they were doing great. They had no heirs and no way to maintain any sort of order past their own lifespans. They lived from moment to moment in each other's company, ruling the pride with iron paws because Scar enjoyed the feeling of power.
What Nala enjoyed more, of course, was eating, and Scar took pains to keep her always full to near-bursting, for no matter how large her appetite grew, her body grew apace, turning her into more of an obscene, formless blob with each passing day. Scar had never seen anything more beautiful.
The two of them lived long (and, in Nala's case, full) lives, and when they finally passed away together, the new stars that appeared in the night sky had a sinister glow. They may live on only in infamy, but the pride would certainly never forget them.
