Chapter 12: Friends Help Each Other   (ID #1048485)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

"Lay low awhile," Bruce finished. "If you're still here come sunrise, people are going to wake up and panic."

"But maybe I could-" Ken started, but stopped himself when he start to realize the gravity of his situation.

"Maybe you could what? What do you think you can do when people begin to flip out! I mean, just look at you." Bruce motioned his arms up and down with his hands pointing at Ken one hundred foot tall body. "You're a giant, Ken! People are going to think you're-" Bruce looked up at spinosaurus head that hovered over him. There was much worry and concern in Ken's eyes. Bruce remembered how upset Ken was with his height. He knew that people feared Ken because of his size which made Ken upset because Ken was actually a nice guy. Yet, people were afraid of him and that was when he was only twelve feet tall.

"They'll think I'm a what?"

"They -- well -- um." Bruce didn't want to finish the sentence he started earlier. He didn't want the word to hurt his friend. The giant friend whose palm his was sitting on.

"They'll think I'm a monster."

"Ken, don't say that-"

"But it's true. It was bad enough when I was the size of a brachiosaurus. Now look at me. I'm bigger than houses. What are they going to think I am now?"

Clearly, Ken was upset. He was both sad and angry, but Ken suppressed those emotions deep inside himself. The only clues that revealed the turmoil inside were his eyes and his voice. Bruce didn't like seeing his friend that way. Sure Bruce was still slightly frightened of Ken's new size, but Ken was still his friend and he didn't want to see his friend in so much pain. Besides, Bruce knew what happens when Ken's emotions get the best of him. Even though Ken was just a softly of a giant, there was something deep inside Ken. It was a savage anger than festered in the core of his being and when Ken got too angry, this raw anger took control and Ken turned into a savage monster of pure rage. Bruce didn't like to see that side of Ken and he knew full well that Ken regretted everything he did when those fits came over him. If Ken lost control while he was a one hundred foot tall giant, there was no telling what could happen, and Bruce didn't want Ken to suffer the aftermath of what would happen. "Ken, please, you have to understand."

"I understand fully. I am a monster. I'm a giant freak, and now I'm even bigger. It was bad enough when I was smaller, but now I'm a giant monster."

"Ken, you have to understand that being afraid of bigger things is a natural fear people have. It's just something that's true to everyone. Even if those big things are kind and gentle, people will still fear it because it's still big. It's the power that those big things have that people fear. It's the potential of danger."

"But maybe I could just stay here and try to explain to people I'm not dangerous."

"Ken, your gigantic and that automatically makes you dangerous, even if you don't mean to be."

"But if I can show them that I'm not a monster and that I would never harm another person. I could just sit here till people realize I mean no harm."

"How many giant monster movies have you seen? What happens in all of them?"

"But if I'm not destroying the town-"

"People will still fear you and think you've come here to rampage. The police force will come and maybe even the military will attack. Do you want to end up like all those monsters from the movies?"

"But if I explain to them that I'm just a normal person that suddenly turned into a giant-"

"Who's going to believe that? I'm having troubles believing it and I'm sitting in your hand! Please, Ken, you need to hide. Suddenly shocking the town with your appearance will get yourself killed. We have to find a way to explain to the town first before showing them what happened. We have to take things slow."

Ken looked away from the small dragon in his hand and looked to the ground. He sighed and agreed, "You're right." Ken closed his eyes to force the tears back. "Are you afraid of me too?"

Bruce knew that Ken was his friend and would never do anything to harm him. He was always bigger than him. Why would he act differently now that he was even larger? Yet, Bruce was still scared of Ken. Yes, he knew he was safe with Ken. But that size was just so intimidating. But Bruce couldn't let Ken know his was afraid. He didn't want to hurt Ken any more than he was already hurting. "No, you're my friend, Ken. I know that you would never hurt me and I'm not afraid of you. Even if you were a million feet tall, you'd still be my friend."

Ken stared back down at Bruce when he answered and Ken could tell he was lying. Ken could see the fear in Bruce's eyes and hear it in his voice. But that lie comforted Ken. Yes, Bruce was still afraid of him, but it was that fact that Bruce was willing to lie in order to comfort him and the fact that Bruce was willing to face his greatest fear just to help a friend that made Ken realize that his best friend was still his best friend and that he'd always be his friend. "Thanks," Ken replied with a small smile.

"What are friends for, right?"

Ken nodded before looking around the town. The town was still highly inactive and he believed he could escape it before anyone noticed him. Even if someone did spot him, they'd be too tired or maybe even too drunk to realize he was real. But there was still one question. "Where should I hide?"

"We could go to the forest. There are trees big enough to hide you. You're luckily that the average tree height in that forest is over one hundred feet tall."

Ken picked up on a certain word Bruce said and it surprised him. "We?"

"Well, sure. I have to come along with you so that I know where to find you, right?"

"Right," Ken replied, happy to know that Bruce was going to help him get through this. "But, you won't be able to keep up if you walk."

"I understand." Bruce braced himself, but he wasn't ready for the strong force that pressed him against the leathery skin of his giant spinosaurus friend's hand when Ken stood up to his normal height at a normal pace. "Hey, not so fast! I think I left my stomach down there."

"Sorry, I'll be more careful, I promise."

With that said, Ken began walking slowly to the outskirts of the town with his hand that held his friend at chest level. Ken looked down the entire time at his feet. He watched every step he took to make sure he didn't break anything in this miniature town. He couldn't live with himself if he were to absent mindedly hurt someone, let alone if he actually stepped on someone. Bruce stayed silent as well, not wanting to make Ken lose his concentration. Neither of them noticed that Ken had left giant three toed footprints everywhere he stepped.
