After all, she had not run nearly far enough to even reach the city walls. Why should she think she is in some mountains she can barely see on a clear day?], another need comes to mind, I'm hungry." For a moment, Jenny must wonder if this qualifies as a command, but before she can decide, Delta continues, "Look!, and scrambles up into the apple tree, leaving Jenny to wonder if she had somehow obeyed the command before she even knew it was one. It seems unlikely. Not only is she reluctant to obey, but making a tree like this would be pretty skillful magic, maybe too skillful her to manage. On the other hand, what is this apple tree doing out here in the wilds? She isn't sure, but didn't there have to be a farmer?
"Catch" Delta's 'order'. causes her to focus on the apple being thrown at her. Started, she would have no chance of catching it, if she were not a djinni who had been "ordered" to catch it. Even so, she is surprised to find an apple in her hand. "Want another?" Jenny pauses. She does not need to eat at all. Still, she does enjoy it... She nods and Delta tosses another to her, which she manages to catch fairly easily.
Delta picks several more and scrambles down and they both began to enjoy their treasures. For Delta, these are perhaps the best apples she has ever tasted. She has gotten a few, rotten and scrawny ones that merchants had thrown away as unsaleable, and she had learned to climb to steal a few, which were mostly green. But these are perfectly ripe. She happily digs in. Jenny however is distracted. Again Delta's wishes are to help Jenny, which makes it hard for a djinn to get revenge for being ordered around. Now with a normal master, she could just let karma run its course. Delta had been in major danger in the city, and so karma ruled she would have to be in major danger here. Sensitive to such things, Jenny could already sense the wolves.approaching. But now Jenny owes karma to Delta and so the wolves catch a luckless pair of rabbits, enough to take the edge off their hunger, but leaving them curious, and hopeful about whether there will be something tasty ahead.
But they are not hungry enough to be reckless, which means they approach slowly, That in turn gives Delta time to spot them and to run for the tree with a scream of "Run!" to warn Jenny. Delta had never seen a wolf before, but she had seen more than enough guard dogs, who were really dangerous if they were off their leashes. These 'dogs' had clearly slipped their leashes and might attack anybody. Maybe the cop had sicked them on her. In any case she must get to where they can't bite her.
Delta is so busy with her own climbing that she finds nothing really odd about Jenny being already up in the tree and giving her a final helping hand. She had already gotten high enough to be safe from the disappointed wolves, but that helping hand still helps. "Thanks." Delta offers, "You climb really fast."
"I can." Jenny replies. She has to tell her master the truth, usually, but that does not force her to be honest. Let her think she had gotten into the tree by natural means. It would limit her demands on Jenny.
There is little to do until the wolves go away, which they soon do since there is no chance for food now, but simple fear is enough to keep Delta in the tree even if she had not encountered a guard dog that had waited for her just out of sight. So she waits in a state of fear, eventually breaking down in tears, "Everybody is always chasing me. I wish I could go where nobody would be chasing me."
Again a nice vague wish that thrills Jenny. Delta might really regret this wish. Unfortunately it is too vague. With a little twisting, she could be sent to her grave. And as much as Jenny wants to hate her master, there is no way she can call that what Delta deserves. So she must be very careful in twisting this wish, indeed so careful that she really has very little idea what will happen, except that Delta will survive [tho it is possible she will not think that is an advantage.] "I may know of such a place," Jenny answers, realizing she does know that, if nothing else. "The wolves are gone, so we can walk there now. It is not very far..."
An entirely too trusting Delta hops out of the tree and starts to run until Jenny insists it is not within running distance. [Jenny is careful not to mention it is within flying distance, and of course Delta does not consider it.] So the two set off at a brisk walk. Where will this story go next? Your choices are below...
