Chapter 22: Waking from a Peaceful Night   (ID #938291)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

Morning came and the sunlight began to poke its way through the entrance of Michael's cave. In the cave, Michael continued to sleep on his back with Allison peacefully sleeping on his chest as his hand covered her like a blanket. Some of the sun's light crept in deeper and small rays of light stoked the face of the young human sleeping on the cheat of a giant angle.

Allison began to awaken due to the light depleting the darkness between her eyes and the lids that covered them. Allison had a wonderful night's sleep and she wasn't quick to wake up too soon. She had the most peaceful sleep she had in years. It was the first time since she had became Daniel's girlfriend that she actually felt safe as she had slept.

She paid attention to her sense of touch and though that sense she examined her surroundings. She felt the ground beneath her. It was soft and smooth, and a great warmth seemed to permeate from that ground. Her covers seemed to be made of the same material. She was the warmest and most comfortable bed she had ever been in. There was only one problem, it wasn't her cot. Allison forgot about everything that had happened to her the other night and forgot all about Michael. Because of this, she was very confused and had no idea where she was and how she got there.

"What's going on? Where am I?" Allison panicked. She examined things more closely, still using her sense of touch. She didn't want to open her eyes, fearing what her surroundings might end up being. The ground beneath her and covering her was like nothing she had ever felt. It was the softest and smoothest surface she had touched. It seemed so alien to her and yet so familiar. There was also a source of heat coming from the surface. The surface beneath her was also moving up and down in a rhythmic pattern, almost like breathing. "Is what I'm lying on living?" Allison gasped, "Am I on some gigantic creature? And what am I hugging?"

Allison opened her eyes and backed her head away slightly to get a better look. When her eyes focused, she realized that she was cuddling against a giant thumb! Allison realized that she was lying on the chest of a giant and its hand was lying on top of her. Allison looked up and saw the giant's head. Allison shivered with fear due to the shear size of the giant. Allison tried to push the hand off her, but it was too heavy. The giant began to stir and Allison panicked and tried to frantically push at the hand, but it was no use.

Michael had the best sleep he had ever gotten in his life. His dreams were peaceful and had no nightmares. He actually felt a sense of belonging, now that he finally had a friend. His dreams were filled with Allison, his first and only friend. Michael started to wake up when he sensed the presence of fear. Michael opened his eyes and looking in the direction of the fear. There, he saw Allison still on his chest under his hand, but she looked back up at him in a fearful expression. Michael was confused by his friend's sudden fear of him and he said, "Allison?" His voice had a hint of sadness, confusion, worry, and disappointment all in one.

"The giant knows my name?" Allison gasped. Suddenly, she recalled all that had happened that night. She had gone camping with her friends, and Daniel. When she fell asleep, a giant angel came to her campsite and took her away. He had explained that he was only lonely and longed for a friend. The angel was very gentle and kind. Despite his size and power, the angel treated Allison like a friend and an equal. His name was Michael and she was safe with him.

"Are you alright, Allison?" Michael asked with worry.

Allison sighed and calmed down. She had thought all of that had been a dream because of how crazy and fantastic it seemed, but it had been real. "I'm fine, Michael," Allison informed him, "I just forgot what happened last night, but I remember everything now."

Michael sighed with relief, "I was worried you thought I was a monster again." Michael pressed Allison against his chest a little more firmly as he sat up. He did this to make sure Allison wouldn’t slide down. Michael made sure to sit up carefully and slowly. When he was up and sitting cross legged, Michael lowered his other hand below Allison. He removed his first hand and Allison slid into his waiting palm. Once Allison was sitting cross legged in his palm, he lowered it closer to his stomach level so that he would have less trouble keeping his hand up.

Michael's wings ached from sleeping on his back, it wasn't the brightest idea he had. He rolled his shoulders and opened his wings to stretch them. This was the first time Allison had ever seen Michael's wings, and they were beautiful. Michael's wings were just so large, even for him, and made of the prettiest white feathers she had ever seen. Michael noticed Allison staring at his wings and he smiled and asked, "What is it, Allison?"

"Your wings... They're magnificent," Allison admitted.

"Thanks," Michael replied, "Did you have a good night sleep?"

"Yes, very much," Allison answered, "You make a very comfortable bed." Allison blushed at the last sentence and looked away. She couldn't believe she had just told him that.

Michael's face reddened a little too and admitted, "I had a good night as well. So, what do we do now?"

"Well I..." Allison started, but suddenly, she remembered something, "Oh no!"

"What's wrong?" Michael asked.

"My friends! I need to get back to my campsite. My friends are going to be worried if I'm not there. They'll start looking for me and if they don't find me, they'll get the town. People will search the forest and if they find out you kidnapped me, they won't understand. They'll try to kill you!" Allison explained.

"So, I need to bring you back to your campsite?" Michael replied, saddened.

"I need to get to my friends. They'd be very worried," Allison informed Michael.

"So that you can be with your real friends and leave me?" Michael said in a dark tone, "Are you going to abandon me like everyone else?"

Allison began petting the palm she was sitting in to try and calm Michael down. "I'm not going to leave you, Michael. You're still my friend and I want to be your friend, but I have to get to my other friends. Maybe I can introduce you to them. Maybe I can get them to understand you're not a monster. Please Michael, they'll be very worried," Allison pleaded.
