Chapter 24: Worried Sick   (ID #941288)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

Earlier that morning at the campsite...

"Alan, Alan, wake up!" Carol ordered as she shook the sleeping Alan.

Alan groaned and slowly sat up. "Is it breakfast already?" Alan muttered.

"No, Allison's still gone Carol told him.

Alan looked over at Allison's cot and she was still not sleeping in it and no where to be found. Alan then looked into Carol's face. He saw the worry in her face and it looked like she was going to start panicking really soon. "Are you sure she's just not using the bathroom out there again? It sounds like a big coincidence, but it is possible that you've just woke up both times to her having to leave to use the bathroom. People have to go when they first wake up, usually," Alan tried to calm Carol as well as give assuring suggestions.

"I've been up for a while and she hasn't come back yet," Carol told Alan, "Besides, the cot looks the exact same as it did last night and her boots are in the same spot. She's been missing since last night. What if some terrible monster or animal took her and..." Carol's mind was swarming with terrible things that might have happened to Allison. This only made her more worried and closer on the verge of panic. Allison was her best friend. If something happened to Allison, Carol didn't know what she'd do.

Alan placed a hand on Carol's shoulder and interrupted Carol panic attack, "Shhh, calm down. Let's take a look at her cot and..."

Carol cut off his voice by punching his arm and saying, "Calm down? Allison is missing in the forest; we have no idea what happened to her. For all we know, she could be dead or injured somewhere and you don't seem to be scared or worried."

"I am worried and scared for Allison," Alan told her, "But we are not going to find her or find out what happened to her by panicking. If we want to find her, we have to stay calm and keep our heads."

Carol took a few deep breaths before agreeing with Alan and apologized for hitting him and panicking like she did. Alan and Carol walked over to Allison's cot. The boots were still there and the cot didn’t look too messy. It was as if Allison had taken off the covers herself to just go into the forest. "There seems to have been no struggle and no blood around here. So, either what took here was highly intelligent to uncover normally before taking her in her sleep, which I highly doubt there is a creature like that in these forest, or she left this campsite herself. Plus if it was something that took her, why wouldn't it take us to?" Alan suggested.

"But if she left herself, why wouldn't she bring her boots and why isn't she back yet?" Carol questioned.

"I'm not sure," Alan answered, "Maybe she didn't think she would be going that far. For her not being her yet, maybe she got lost or ran into something dangerous out there."

"We have to find her, Alan. Wake up, Daniel!" Carol ordered.

Alan looked over to Daniel who was still asleep and then back at Carol. "I'm not going to wake him. Are you crazy?" Alan replied.

"We have a situation here and we need him to help," Carol pointed out.

"Fine," Alan gave in and walked over to Daniel. He didn't get in arms reach of Daniel and continued to stand up as he hollered, "Daniel, we need you to wake up."

Daniel grumbled, while keeping his eyes closed still, "What is it?"

"Allison's missing," Alan informed Allison's boyfriend.

"The bitch will be back. Now let me go back to sleep," Daniel growled.

Alan hated it when Daniel called Allison a bitch and other terrible names. Allison was a good person, one of his closest friends, she didn't deserve such treatment. Alan wanted to beat Daniel for what he said, but he knew he would be no match for the brute. Instead, Alan calmly replied, "She's been missing since last night, she might be in trouble."

Daniel groaned and sat up. "Stupid girl, she's going to pay for running off and making me have to find her ass," Daniel muttered. Daniel put on his boots and started walking off. He made it to the edge of the campsite before he turned and asked, "Either of you coming to?"

Alan turned to Carol after putting his own shoes on and instructed her to stay in the campsite in case Allison should come back. Alan left with Daniel to search for Allison.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

When Allison arrived at the campsite, Daniel and Alan were still gone, looking for her. As soon as Carol saw Allison, she stood up and rushed over to her. Carol embraced her friend and cried, "You're alive! You're alright!"

"Yes, I'm fine," Allison assured he friend. She looked around and noticed that Daniel and Alan were gone. "Where are Daniel and Alan?" Allison asked.

"They're out looking for you," Carol told her before she quickly pushed away from Allison and started to scold Allison, "Where were you? You've been gone all night! I was worried sick about you. You could have been dead or injured. I barely got any sleep last night, because I was worried about you. What happened?"

Allison thought about what she should do. She could try and tell a lie, but she was bad at lying. She could also tell her the truth. Michael was surely waiting in the spot she left him, because she hadn't come back to tell him where and when to met later that day. She could tell Carol the truth and bring her to Michael. Carol with definitely be frightened of Michael, but if she stayed and saw how gentle Michael was, Allison was sure Carol would like him.

What did she do?
