This choice: Alexander stops David. | Go Back

  Chapter 36: Confrontation?   (ID #948264)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

Alexander noticed movement as soon as he had lead Christopher out of the tavern. Someone had gotten up the second he showed Christopher. Normally, Alexander wouldn't have cared or paid attention to such an action, but this was Christopher who was most likely going to be followed just after he claimed to have found evidence of a giant demoness living in the forest. Alexander knew that there were some townspeople who tormented Christopher because of how crazy the town thought Christopher was. Some people had even gotten violent about Christopher's beliefs. Though Alexander didn't believe Christopher, he believed that Christopher only believed it because of the torture and torment he had experienced from the demoness thirteen years ago. What Christopher had gone though must have been terrible and it had traumatized him. He couldn't allow the poor hermit to be tormented further by others.

Alexander watched the man head for the door. The man was wearing a cloak and hood. Before the man could exit the tavern, Alexander placed a hand on his shoulder. "Where do you think you're going?" Alexander questioned.

"I was just leaving," David quickly answered. He didn't turn to face Alexander, because David's facial expression was that of nervousness. He was worried that Alexander had somehow recognized him and was about to question him about Christopher's claim. He did live in the open field after all and was the only one living in that area.

"You sure it's not to follow Christopher?" Alexander replied.

"Well, I..." David started.

Alexander interrupted, "I saw you get up when I lead Christopher out the door. It seems clear to me that you intend to follow him, unless it's some big coincidence."

David cursed himself in his mind for being so obvious. He should have waited a little after Christopher left, but then he probably wouldn't have been able to follow him. David knew that lying was the worst thing he could do in this situation. "I was going to follow him," David admitted.

Alexander forced David to turn and face him. He brought his face close to David's and asked, "Why did you wish to follow him? Were you going to torment him about his past?" Upon looking at David's face, David looked to be within the right age group of the people that normally tormented Christopher and his beliefs about a giant demoness still living in the forest.

"No, I..." David tried to explain.

However, Alexander continued to speak, "That poor man has been through enough torture in his life. He and his family were one of the first victims to be captured by the giant demoness so long ago. By the time Bowhan came to kill it, Christopher was one of the only ones left alive. His whole family, his wife, teenage son, and six year old daughter were all dead before Bowhan got there. I have no idea about everything that happened, but Christopher was clearly traumatized by the event. Who wouldn't be? Tormenting him further is only making things worse."

"I wasn't following him to torment him further," David answered, "I just wanted to ask about the demoness he had met a long time ago. I wasn't intending to torture him, just find out information."

"And why would you want to learn about that monster?" Alexander questioned, it was an odd request. Alexander looked and David more closely and recognized him. "Aren't you the one who lives in the open field?" David cursed again in his mind as he nodded. Alexander looked around to see no one was looking or close to them. Alexander whispered, "Do you want to know about demons because you saw what Christopher saw? Does this evidence he supposedly saw really exist?"

"I'm not sure," David lied, "I haven't been out there yet. When I heard Christopher come in and say where he had seen his evidence, I grew worried and I wanted to follow him to ask about what he saw, where he saw it, and about the giant demoness thirteen years ago. If there really is one, I want to be prepared."

Alexander examined David for a bit and David was worried that Alexander wouldn't belief him. Alexander's face lightened up and he replied in an assuring voice, "Well, there is no need to worry. Christopher has claimed there had been another giant demon ever since the first one died. However, there are a few things wrong with that theory."

"What would those be?" David asked.

"For one, Bowhan made sure that he killed the demoness and any children it could have bore. He found no evidence of a child. Even Christopher admitted that he never saw such evidence either. Plus, if there has been a giant demoness in the forest for the past thirteen years, why hasn't it attacked or taken anyone. Demons are supposed to be wicked beasts of pure evil; it would stand by idly for thirteen years, would it?" Alexander explained.

"So, you don't think there is a demoness out there?" David asked, acting as though he was being assured by Alexander's explanations.

"Unless I find any evidence to tell me otherwise, I don't think there is a giant demoness out there," Alexander replied. Alexander paused as he thought about something. "Hey, you seem to be trustworthy enough," Alexander spoke, "I really don't like going all the way out there to search the forest for this supposed evidence. Since you're going to go into the forest tomorrow anyway, could you look for Christopher’s claim and come get me if there really is something there?"

"Sure," David answered knowing he had no other choice but to say yes.

"Good, now go back home and get some sleep. I believe the rain has stopped," Alexander replied.

David nodded and left the tavern.
