Chapter 1: Sophia's Yin and Yang   (ID #617522)

Sophia reclined on her plushy bed, nodding her head to the beat of her MP3 player. Her eyes were closed as she lost herself in the music, her long black hair trailing down around her shoulders. Her melodic moment was rudely interrupted by three out-of-tune knocks on her room door. The orphanage doors were thin as well, so the knock penetrated through the wood and reached Sophia's occupied ears easily. Corel peeked her head out from behind the door, her pink eyes and albino white hair identifying her instantly.
"Hey Sophia." Corel said with her usual enthusiasm. Sophia nodded in response. "Listening to anything?"
"Pendulum. Propane Nightmares." Sophia continued to rock her head to the song.
"Neat." Corel remained silent for a second. "Do you have my camera by any chance?"
Sophia lazily waved her hand at her (recently varnished) desk, on which an expensive and high-tech camera laid. Corel picked it up delicately, cast a glance at Sophia, then silently left. She could see Sophia was having her private time interrupted and that didn't 'gel well' with her.
Seeing as she had nothing to do all day and no chores around the orphanage on a Sunday, Sophia stood up and lazily strode over to the window. The orphanage wasn't the stereotypical Oliver Twist workhouse, but she still wanted a life of her own. She wanted something new, a change, an adventure to put it.

As she moved her hands, her fine ears alerted her of a small shriek. Turning around to observe her room, she saw nobody else. She thought Corel may had returned, but was nervous to find her nowhere to be seen. Putting the noise out of her mind, she looked back out of the window and put her hands on the windowsill. As she did, a faint voice seemed to ring from somewhere she could determine.
"Yang, don't!" The voice genuinely seemed gentle and kind.
"Can't stop me!" The voice seemed in contrary dark and mean.
Sophia suddenly felt a small yet sharp pain in her right hand. Instinctively, she turned to the source of the disturbance and saw an unusual sight.

Two girls, barely the size of her finger, was standing beside her hand. The first was garbed in a blue shirt and white trousers, her snow white hair flowing around her shoulders. Frail yet beautiful butterfly wings protruded from her back. The second was dressed in a red shirt and black trousers, coal black hair falling down across her back. Distinctive and demonic bat wings accompanied her and shadowed her slightly. The one in black had stamped on her finger while the one in white seemed to have tried to stop her. Both of them looked up at Sophia, who looked back with disbelief.
Her mind could not comprehend the impossible sight and thus shut down, resulting in Sophia's unconsciousness.

As light began to flood through her eyelids and reality sunk back in, Sophia slowly opened her eyes and realized she was on the floor. The faint pink ceiling above her confirmed her theory. As she staggered to get back up and remember what had happened, she turned to the covers of her bed. There were the two tiny girls again, both of them ranting at each other seemingly unaware of Sophia's awakening.
Sophia herself was unsure how to react. She had gotten over the shock of their appearance quickly, but she had little to grasp from the situation. Who they are, what they were doing in her room and other ominous questions floated in her mind. Watching the two argue about a topic she could bother listening to, she blinked to confirm again that this was not a hallucination. They remained in existence as she blinked again. Sure that she was not seeing things, she drew a breath and reached down to grab the two girls by their wings.

As the miniature beings noticed the two huge hands descending, they had no time to react. Long fingers and thick thumbs plucked the girls from the woolen bed surface and ascended them through the air. They dangled in front of Sophia's face, an expression of neither happiness nor sadness.
"Yang, you made her mad. I told you she would be mad." The girl in white reminded her companion.
"Oh so shut it Yin! It was the only way to get her attention!" The girl in black bitterly countered.
Sophia shook her hands sharply, retaining the small beings' attention. Yin was the white-haired one, Yang was the black-haired one. Ready to speak to them, she drew a breath.

"Hello there." Her voice was flat. Yin nodded her head in respect while Yang crossed her arms. "...Well? Who are you?"
Yin blushed slightly. "Well, I'm Yin and..." She reluctantly acknowledged the other girl. "That's Yang." Yang gave a frown.
Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Alright, so what are you then?"
Yin opened her mouth to explain their role thoroughly, but Yang interrupted her. "You know in a cartoon when someone has a little angel and devil on their shoulders telling them what they should do?" Sophia nodded. "We're like them. Guardians, so to speak."
"Right. So what are you doing here?" Sophia narrowed her eyes inquisitively.
"Well, we're your guardians." Yin perked up. "Not like parent guardians, I mean mystical kind of guardians."
Sophia gave a frown overshadowing the previous one Yang had made. "Why me, then?"
The two guardians looked at each other nervously. Yin made a subtle gist to Yang to field the question. "Uh... think of it as a lottery that you won." The black-haired girl seemed somewhat awkward having replied. Sophia didn't notice the strange behavior.

"Okay, this is all well and good but-"
"Hey!" Yang's small voice seemed to be trying to threaten the giant girl holding her by her bat wings. "Gonna let us down soon?"
Sophia rolled her eyes and lowered the girls down onto her recently varnished desk. The angelic Yin and the demonic Yang were glad to no longer be hanging by their wings.

"Alright, so what does this mean?" Sophia asked another question.
"Ah! Well, we can grant a wish." Yin noted with optimism. Sophia's eyebrows heightened.
"Interesting. Maybe I could-" A cough from Yang interrupted the 'giantess'.
"You've already made it, you know."
"...What?"
"We take the first wish you made into account." Yang gave a cocky grin.
"You made your first wish when you were four. Your birthday? Blowing out the candles on the cake? Everyone told you to make a wish?" Yin eyed Sophia, who was blinking plainly. "Do you remember what you wished for?"
Sophia skimmed her memory for her past experiences and thoughts. "...I wished I could change the size of things. I think it was because I wanted to shrink down and play with my toys or grow them for the same reason." Sophia looked away, blushing with her childhood dream.

Yang tutted. "Well done, then. You can do that now."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Honest?"
"Honest."
"Posi-"
"Yes!"
Sophia contemplated the new situation she was in. A guardian angel and guardian demon barely three inches tall had given her the power to grow and shrink things at will. As she believed they were telling the truth, since nothing seemed extraordinary anymore, she decided on how to test her newfound ability.
