Dr Gilderoy was an old friend of the Smith family. He was an old archeologist with a penchant for the occult. He'd been a dear friend of Edward Smith's father and would often send the family little trinkets from the various locals he visited. As such it was no surprise to the smiths when one day a package showed up on their doorstep from the good doctor.

It was a bit surprising however that it contained a rather stylishly crafted silver necklace, with what resembled an ancient silver coin suspended on the chain. Normally the doctor sent things of a more unsettling nature, like an old dried up monkeys paw or painted skull. Of course there was a long letter about it being cursed, but no-one paid it much attention, everything Gilderoy sent them carried the same warnings.
