  Chapter 19: Hiding   (ID #962737)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

Felix was surprised when Arachne had suddenly grabbed him. It was a bit scary when Arachne picked him up without warning, even if he knew that Arachne would never harm him. It was especially scary when she did it so quickly. The fact that she could just pick him up as easily as a child picking up a toy was still an intimidating thing. Felix didn't even have time to react from his surprise. One moment he was on the ground, the next moment he was in Arachne's fist from his shoulders down pressed up against her chest. It all happened so fast. He didn't have times to lift his arm so that they wouldn't be trapped between his sides and the skin of Arachne's hand. All he saw was the world blur around him. Felix had to keep his eyes closed to try and stop the dizzying effect. Once Felix adjusted his eyes, he looked around and noticed that the canopy of the forest was much closer now. It was hard to tell, since most of Felix's 180 degree vision from left to right was made up of Arachne's body, but Felix could tell that Arachne had climbed up to the canopy.

Luckily for Arachne, the trees were still larger than her, but nowhere near the height of the trees of her world. It was possible that once Arachne grows to her full height, she might become the same size as the trees, maybe even bigger. For now, she was glad that the trees were still decently larger than her. Felix looked directly up at Arachne, but could only see under her chin. Arachne was looking directly down at the ground, but could not see Felix because she wasn't standing straight up in the canopy. Instead her body was at an angle, or at least her human body was, and it was positioned so that it was looking directly to the ground. Arachne's spider legs were attached to the tree trunks around her.

"Arachne, what's wrong?" Felix asked her chin.

Arachne turned her gaze to Felix in her hand and said in a hushed voice, "Someone's coming."

Felix saw a lot of fear in Arachne's eyes. This might seem strange, because Arachne was probably the largest thing in the forest, unless there was a dragon or some other giant monster living in the forest However, she was still a child and she had met many nasty humans. Also, her time in Felarya had programmed her mind to be cautious and stay in the shadows. In Felarya, terrible monsters could eat her at any moment and have no regrets doing so, despite Arachne being a child and a person. In fact, Felix was the only person she had met that has been kind to her. He’s the only person she has met that she could trust. Because Felix is the only she's found trust in, meeting other people would still make Arachne nervous.

"Arachne, turn me around," Felix whispered. He wanted to be able to see what was going on. Arachne put her other hand under the hand with Felix and carefully deposited him in her other hand. Felix rolled onto his stomach and edged to the end of Arachne's hand. Felix put both arms over the side of Arachne's hand so that when she wrapped her fingers around him, his arms would be free. Arachne closed her hand and raised it against her chest again. Both Felix and Arachne looked down at the ground and waited.

They both saw a woman enter the area. The woman was dressed like a hunter would and had long red hair. She looked like she was a strong willed woman. Felix guessed that she might have had to take care of herself without a husband seeing as though she had to do the hunting and he guessed taking care of herself has made her strong and independent. She was very beautiful as well and looked nothing like the slave women Felix had met. Felix knew that this must have been the woman Arachne probably saw.

The woman walked over to the berry bushes a with a basket. A bow and arrows were still strapped to her. She was humming a song as she walked. It was a lovely melody and Felix started thinking that he had heard it before. He knew he couldn't have because there were no humming people in Lord William's castle. Yet, something about this woman's humming tune sounded very familiar. It seemed to entrance Felix as he continued to wonder where he had heard it from.

Arachne kept as still and quiet as possible. Sure she was larger than the human, but she didn't want a confrontation. She knew that she wouldn't be able to bring herself to harm the human if the human attacked, especially if the human only did so because it was afraid that Arachne would hurt it. Plus, Arachne didn't want to see if the human was friendly or not in fears that the human would be evil like most of the other humans she had met. No, Arachne knew it was best to keep hidden.

The hunter, Beth, did not see Arachne. Now, that may be hard to believe, but Arachne was in the canopy and Beth was only looking straight ahead at ground level. Even if she did look up, it might still be hard to spot Arachne. Sure Arachne's human skin was purple and her spider body was huge and black, but if Arachne stayed in the cluster of trees and didn't move, she might be able to pull off being unnoticed.

Beth picked the berries she needed and stopped humming. Beth was about to leave, but she stopped. It was then that Beth noticed that it was way too quiet around this part. It was as if something had scared all the animals away. Sure it was possible that it was her, but she didn't even hear birds. It was like something large had scared everything around. Beth had heard stories of some giant monsters living in the forest, but luckily she had never encountered one before. Beth set her basket of berries down slowly and pulled out an arrow. Beth turned around slowly, looking around the forest.

Arachne held her breath and hoped the human wouldn't find them.
