  Chapter 22: Arachne's Story Continued   (ID #967224)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

"I come from a different world called Felarya," the dridder started, "Felarya is a beautiful place, but very dangerous and terrible."

"This dridder's from a different world? Is that why she looks so different from the dridders of our world?" Beth wondered.

Arachne continued her story, "It's a land made for giants where humans are one of the smallest creatures. These giants are all intelligent like me, but they eat human sized creatures. They don't care that humans are people. If they are small enough to eat, they are considered prey and not people."

Beth didn't like the sound of this world. She trusted the dridder even less now if it came from this world. "Why is it telling me this? Doesn't it realize that it's making her seem more like a monster? If this dridder is like the other giants of her world, then it won't think twice about eating a human when it grows bigger. Maybe it wants to eat humans now," Beth thought.

"When I hatched, I was all alone. No parents cared for me. I was human sized when I hatched. I searched Felarya for someone to care for me or at least be my friend. The giants didn't care if I was a person. They would try to eat me every time I encountered one. They didn't care that I was just a child. I was food to them, and nothing else," Arachne informed the woman with the bow. Arachne had to pause as tears filled her ruby eyes upon recalling the memories.

Beth was mortified by Arachne's story. She couldn't believe that something with a sentient mind would actually be willing to eat a child. She was also having troubles imagining this dridder as human-sized. But if the dridder the size of a human once and it was hunted by these giants, then it must have been terrible. Beth began to feel sorry for the giant dridder. She couldn't imagine being a small child all alone, needing comfort and care, only to be nearly eaten by giants that only saw her as a delicious snack. It must have been terrible. "Could this be the reason the dridder sees humans as friends, because she knows what it's like to be the small person and at the mercy of bigger creatures?" Beth questioned, "Maybe even that loneliness and the desperate attempt to find a person the cares about her has helped her see humans as people as well."

"I lived in Felarya for five years and just started having my growth spurts. In another week, I will be about 75 feet tall," Arachne told her, "I woke up one day in another world and humans captured me and brought me to Lord William. I met Felix and he was good to me."

"At first I was scared of Arachne, but I quickly realized that even though she was a giant dridder from a different world, she was still just a sad and lonely child that just wanted a friend. We became friends quicker than you would think. Trust me, once you get to know Arachne, she's a wonderful and gentle child," Felix interrupted.

"There was a bump in our friendship, though," Arachne admitted, "When I found out Felix was a human, I wanted to eat him. When in Felarya, I had never met a human, but I had overheard other giants talking about them and how delicious they are. They would say that if someone were to encounter a human, they would be a fool not to eat it. It made me want to find and eat a human, but I had no idea they were intelligent. I told Felix to stay away from me and that he was safer out of my reach. I didn't want to eat Felix, because he was my friend, but I was worried my instincts would take over." Arachne shivered at the memory and Felix did his best to try and comfort her as he sat in her palm.

Arachne looked down at Felix and smiled. As she used the pointer finger of her free hand to pet the back of Felix's head and back Arachne said, "Luckily, Felix reminded me of how I felt when I was in Felarya and human sized. It was terrible and I don't want to put anyone through what I went through and I never want to become a monster like those other giants. I will protect the people smaller than me from other giant monsters and I will treat them as people, not food. Besides, I know that I could not go on without Felix. If I would have eaten him, I would have lost the only friend I have ever had. I would be alone again, and I never want to be alone again."
