  Chapter 85: Arthur!   (ID #992828)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

"I first met him many, many, years ago. I cannot remember how long ago it was, but I think it was at the very least around six years ago," Fiona informed them all, " I had left my parents and by the time I met him, I had been living in the Bulvon Forest for a couple of years. It was a very dark time for me." Fiona's mind recalled those first years in the Bulvon forest. She had been completely alone for that whole duration between then and the time she had left her parents and the human village. They seemed very long and lonely years for her, and it had allowed her naga instincts to kick in more frequently than ever. Those instincts took over at times and caused her to devour humans which only brought her into a deeper depression and filled her with terrible regret and fear for any human that should encounter her.

"Was that a dark time for you because you were lonely?" Felix asked, seeing the expression Fiona had made after she had told them when she had first met the human and while she retreated into a silence and gazed into nothingness.

"Yes, that was one of the reasons," Fiona muttered as she continued to stare into nothingness. Protecting her parents by allowing them to stay in the safe human village wasn't the only motive for running away. She also feared her naga instincts and her naga desires of eating humans. She thought that the village would be much safer with her gone. But being alone in the savage world of the Bulvon Forest only allowed her instincts to strengthen their hold on her and she had given into the evil within herself that she tried to keep at bay by staying as far away from humans as she could. Fiona closed her eyes, but could still see all the faces of the humans she had eaten over the course of her life which brought upon a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach and a single tear drop form the corner of both her eyes, leaving a tear trail.

Seeing Fiona act this way made Fakira feel sorry for the Felaryan naga, because she was clearly recalling her "dark days" more than the human she was supposed to talk about. Hoping to bring Fiona out of such a recall, Fakira asked, "So what happened when you met this human you wish to bring us to?"

This question did bring Fiona back to the whole reason she was recalling these memories and she cleared the faces that plagued her mind. "When I first came across him, he didn't really trust me all that well. I am a naga after all and there are very few nagas out there that are friends of humans. He was a very powerful mage and was able to bind my down to the ground," Fiona explained. Fiona left out the part that the human's suspicion of her was well deserved, because when she first met him, she tried to eat him. It was his powerful magic binding her to the ground that gave her the time to regain control. "I pleaded to him, and I explained to him that I was raised by humans and didn’t want to eat him. Luckily, he believed my words and stayed two days with me to help me with my loneliness. He was a very kind man and I quickly saw him as a friend. He was a traveler, and though he told me very little about himself, I was fine with that. I got to see him quite regularly, because he traveled the same route at regular intervals. Though I would only see him a few days during his travels, and a few special days he would come see me, it did wonders to wiping away my loneliness. Sometimes while he traveled, his wife, or at least I think it was his wife, would stay with me a few days as well to help me. They told me that if I ever needed them, I could visit their home, and they gave me the directions. Though, I've never traveled there."

"This human has a wife?" Solita asked. She found it odd that Fiona did know whether this other person was a wife or not to the human they were going to see.

"They never told me they were married or not. They discussed very little about themselves, but she told me a few things about her past which helped me in many ways. However, they acted like husband and wife, but I've never hear of a human ever actually marrying a Felaryan Top Predator."

"A Felaryan Predator? What was she?" Fakira asked.

"She's a pantaur. I know pantaurs are a branch from the sphinx family, but she definitely must have had some sphinx blood in her, because even if she looked physically like a pantaur, she had some personality qualities of a sphinx. She had a similar past, because she was raised by a human family as well." Fiona remembered one of the many talks she had with the pantaur. Also being a giant Felaryan that was raised by humans, the pantaur saw humans as people, and she to have some difficulties holding her instincts back. However, the pantaur never let it take hold of her and never gave in to eating humans. The pantaur gave Fiona pointers on how to control those savage instincts, and from then on, Fiona had eaten very few humans. She still at humans from time to time and the instincts got the best of her, but she kept in control for close to 95% of her human encounters opposed to those first years alone.

Solita, who was still a little skeptical about Fiona's story, asked, "And what are their names? I could understand them keeping some secrets from you, but surely they've told you their names."

"The pantaur's name is Aubree and the man's name is Arthur," Fiona answered.

The rest of the group froze and stopped what they were doing once they heard that name. They stared at Fiona with wide eyes of surprised while Fiona grew a little uncomfortable with their stares. Ted, who was no longer focused on the cooking meat, stared up at Fiona and quickly asked, "Are you sure his name was Arthur?"

"Yes, I'm very sure. Why are you all looking at me strangely?"

Ted thought about what Fiona had said about the man she called Arthur. She said he was a traveler and walked through the Bulvon Forest regularly. Did that mean his father walked through this forest to get to the dimensional gate? Plus, Fiona said he was a powerful mage. Ted now knew of the dimensional magic his father must have possessed, but maybe he had more magic. The only thing that didn't make since was the pantaur Fiona thought was his wife. "Did he have two wives? Is that why he traveled back and forth though the two realms? Hell, he might even have wives in other dimensions if this is the case." Ted had to know if the Arthur she talked about was the same Arthur that was his father. "Did he have a scar?"

"Yes, why do you ask such questions?"

"Because, I think the man you speak of could possibly be my father."

Fiona's eyes widened now. Was that why Ted looked familiar to her? "Ted, may I take a closer look at you?"

"Why?", but it wasn't Ted that asked this. Instead, it was Solita who got closer to Ted, ready to protect him from the naga.

Fiona looked up at the suspicious fairy before telling her, "I just want to take a closer look to see if he and Arthur have some resemblances." Fiona looked back down at Ted and asked, "So, may I take a closer look at you?" Fiona placed a hand down on the floor with her palm facing upwards.

Ted looked up at Solita who was staring down at him with worry in her eyes. "It'll be alright," Ted mouthed the words to Solita before walking onto Fiona's palm.

Fiona lifted her hand very carefully; she didn't want Solita to be angered with her any more than she probably already was. Fiona lifted Ted to her face and examined him with her different colored eyes. "I knew you looked a bit familiar," Fiona finally told him, "I can see many resemblances of Arthur in you."

"R-really? Could the Arthur you speak of be my father?" Ted asked.

Fiona nodded.

"When did you see him last?"

Fiona thought carefully. She hadn't realized this before, but she soon realized it had been a very long time since she had seen Arthur. "I think... I think it's been close to three, maybe four years since I've seen him."

"Don't you find it odd that a person that you haven't seen a person you used to see regularly in three to four years?" Solita questioned, "You didn't think about going to try and find out what's happened to him?"

"I... I didn't realize it's been so long until I thought about it now," Fiona explained.

"What if he's dead?"

"I..." Fiona started, but had no idea what to even say.

"We still have to go and see him," Ted turned and informed the rest of the group, "If what Fiona says is true, then we have to see him more than ever, because we now we know where he lives."

Fiona soon set Ted down on the ground and he proceeded to approach Solita and the fire that was cooking the meat. Eventually, the meat was cooked for everyone and Fakira grew the food for Solita, Fiona, and herself, while Felix and Ted shared from Fakira and Solita. They really didn't need all the birds Fakira and Fiona captured, but Solita and Fakira knew a way to preserve the food magically and they could carry it with them. Felix blew out the fire with his wind magic. Fiona noticed this.
