Chapter 16: One Step at a Time   (ID #989586)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

"So, we know the time that's best to escape, but how do we escape?" Cillia asked mainly to try and help both their thought processes.

Felix stopped pacing for a while. Pacing normally would have helped him think, but even though Cillia's hand was large enough for him to stand on and even lie on, pacing back and forth with that little distance to pace was making him a little dizzy, even with her cupping two hands together now to give him more room. The last thing Felix needed was to accidentally fall off the hands of his... sister... and hit the stone floor from such a height. Felix looked at the chain cuff around Cillia's wrists and the one around her neck. He knew that she had another around her waist, but he didn't look down at that one. "We should figure it out one step at a time. Starting with how to get those chains and metal cuffs off you," Felix finally said.

"But how do we do that?" Cillia asked, "I don't suppose you know where the keys are."

Felix looked up at Cillia's giant child face. There was doubt in her voice about Felix knowing where the keys that would free her from the chains binding her to the cell were or that Felix would even be able to obtain them. However, her eyes were filled with hopefulness. Felix stared deep into those eyes. Felix knew that she trusted him and believed in him. Despite her size, he was still her big brother and she looked up to him for guidance, security, and assurance. It was a very strange thing to be looked up to by a giant naga that could easily carry him in one hand, but Felix was getting used to it, and Cillia already seemed to have no problems looking up to him already even when she thought he was cute at his small size from time to time. Felix sighed and looked down while shaking his head. "Sorry, but I'm not sure where the keys would be."

"Oh," was all Cillia said as she looked further down beneath where he hands were raised with Felix atop them.

Felix felt as though he had let her down by the sound of that single "Oh". Wishing to cheer Cillia up, Felix quickly said, "But, maybe we won't need the keys. Maybe there is another way out of them. And even if there isn't, I will do my best to find out where those keys might be, I promise."

Cillia looked back up at Felix in her hands and raised those hands up to her face. "I knew I could count on you, brother." Cillia turned her head, and Felix knew what she wanted to do. Felix positioned himself so that he was only on one of her palms. With the other hand, Cillia lifted it vertically and placed it behind Felix. Cillia then brought her cheek down against Felix while his tiny body was between it and her other hand. Cillia rubbed her cheek against her big brother's tiny body. They might not have been able to show the same sort of affection that normal siblings of similar sizes would, but Cillia still found many different ways to show that affection.

When Cillia was finished, she lowered her hands back down to about neck level and Felix sat down in her cupped hands. Cillia smiled happily down at him with new found hope and said, "So, about these chains and cuffs."

"Well, I think we can count out waiting for you to grow out of them, because they've seemed to grow with you, at least the cuffs have."

"Yes, they have," Cillia replied with some sadness.

"But what about the chains? Maybe you could pull them apart or..."

"Felix, these chains have kept me here no matter how much I've pulled. If I could have broken free from them, do you think I'd be here?" Cillia asked. This time, a slight annoyance and frustration was in her voice, but Felix knew those emotions weren't directed towards him.

"Can you take me to the anchors that hold them in the wall?" Felix requested.

Cillia didn't know what Felix would possibly gain by doing this, but Cillia agreed to carry her brother to them anyway. As Cillia approached the wall at the other end of the cell, Felix instructed her to go a little slower. Cillia didn't realize it, but Felix was examining the chains on the floor as well. The chains, though very thick by human standards and big enough to hold a very large beast, never grew with Cillia and were their original size. One chain link was probably at least a four of Felix's size, but there might be a chance of Cillia to break free, or at least that's what Felix thought. Cillia was much stronger and bigger now. Felix hoped to find signs of weakness in the chains or the anchors. When Cillia reached the anchors in the wall, she lifted Felix to each on and let him examine them. While he did this, he didn't give any hints of his plan or why he was doing this.

Cillia was left in suspense the entire time. She wanted badly to ask Felix what was going on, but Felix seemed so focused on what he was doing and she didn't want to disturb him so that he might find a way out of this place. When Felix was finished, Cillia couldn't take the silence any longer and she asked, "So?"
