This choice: "Sarah looks like my mother," Nahash answers. | Go Back

Chapter 39: Possible New Parents   (ID #938564)
an addition by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr.  More by this author

"Sarah looks like my mom," Nahash said quietly. Nahash had tried to say it quietly enough for only Felix to hear. However, it's hard to speak quietly to one person when one's a giant naga who’s bending down close to two humans. As Nahash shifted his eyes back to Sarah, it was clear that she had heard his statement.

Sarah looked away from the giant head near her. "He thinks I look like his mother?" Sarah gasped in her mind. It was a very surprising statement to make to a person one didn't know. Especially if it was a giant naga saying it to a human it had just met! Sarah began to wonder if Nahash really meant what he said and she looked like his mother, or if Nahash's mind was playing tricks on him and made Sarah look like his mother because he missed his mother a lot.

Because Sarah looked away, Nahash believed he had offended her in some way. "I'm sorry," Nahash apologized, "I didn't mean to upset you." Nahash was still young and didn't understand the full impact and complications of his statement, but he was a very bright young naga and understood a good amount. He knew how his comment could have been misinterpreted and makes it sound like he wanted Sarah to be his mother. He knew it must be odd for a giant naga to ask a human he had just met to be his parent. If she still believed he was a monster, it could have offended her.

"I just miss my mother so much, and you look like her a lot," Nahash tried to explain, "If you were a naga I would have thought you were her twin or something." Nahash continued to explain, but it seemed like he was digging himself in a deeper hole, "I wasn't asking you to be my new mom. You don't have to if you don't want to. I am a giant naga after all. But if you do want to be my mom, you can. I just..."

Sarah cut Nahash off and said, "It's alright, I understand what you meant." Nahash sighed and remained quiet. "He does want me to be his mother, though," Sarah realized, "But how can I raise a giant naga. How could something so large ever listen to me? So far as I can tell though, this giant naga seems to act a lot like a normal child. He also seems to be well behaved and considerate of others. Maybe it is possible to raise a giant naga. Maybe this really can work out. He seems gentle enough."

"I'm finished, Nahash," Duncan broke the silence. Nahash reached his hand back and Duncan hoped on.

When Duncan was set on the ground, Nahash stood to his full height and looked down. After being naked ever since his first growth spurt in Lord William's castle, it felt odd to have a loincloth again. It felt strange, yet comfortable. Nahash looked down at Duncan and Sarah and smiled. "Thank you Sarah and Duncan. It fits nicely," Nahash informed the two humans.

"Well, when you continue to grow, we're going to eventually have to add more rope and possibly more sheets," Duncan replied. Duncan turned to Felix and said, "Unfortunately we don't have the time at the moment to make you knew clothes, but we should take a look at that wound before we reach the town."

Felix nodded in agreement and was told to sit down. Duncan and Sarah had brought some things to deal with cuts from there home. Duncan brought over what he needed to disinfect and cover up Felix's wound. Nahash lowered himself down on his stomach to get a closer look. Sarah noticed the pure concern in Nahash's eyes. "How much do you really care about Felix?" Sarah questioned the giant naga.

"He is like a brother to me. I would do anything for Felix. I will protect him from anything," Nahash answered.

Sarah was surprised that a giant naga would care that much about a human. Due to Nahash's personality as well as her inability to have a child of her own, Sarah was becoming more certain that she could raise Nahash and Felix.

"This is going to sting," Duncan warned Felix as well as Nahash so that Nahash wouldn't do anything drastic when seeing Felix in pain. Duncan poured some disinfectant on Felix's wound and Felix hiss a little in pain. It took all of Nahash's effort to resist doing something about it. Duncan then wrapped up the wound with a clean cloth before putting Felix pants leg back down.

"So, what happens now?" Felix questioned.

"Now it's time for the hard part," Duncan replied, "We're going to go to the edge of the forest, but you and Nahash will have to stay in the forest a bit longer. Sarah and I will get my brother and he will gather everyone close to the edge. I will explain everything that happened and try to calm them before showing them you and Felix. When it's time we will introduce the two of you to the village."

"Do you think the village will accept me?" Nahash asked.

"It's uncertain, but I hope so," Duncan answered truthfully.

"And if Nahash is accepted, what will happen to us?" Felix asked.

"You will be raised and cared for by new parents," Duncan answered.

"Who?" Nahash asked.

Duncan looked to his wife. It was clear that she wanted to raise the two boys, even the giant naga. Sarah had seen to good in Nahash and she knew she could never have a child of her own. Sarah nodded, almost begging Duncan to agree with her in taking care of Nahash and Felix. "If all goes well, we will be your new parents," Duncan told them.

"You'd really be my new parents, even if I'm a naga?" Nahash questioned in disbelief.

"Yes," Sarah answered.

Nahash was overjoyed by that answer as he asked, "Can I pick the both of you up? I want to hug you both." Duncan and Sarah agreed to the request and Nahash carefully picked Duncan and Sarah up in each hand. He then brought them to his chest after standing up again. Nahash gave them a firm, but gentle hug. When he was finished, he placed Duncan and Sarah back down on the ground.

"I think we should start," Duncan said, "We're not that far, and we can walk there."

"Can I still carry you, Felix?" Nahash requested. Felix agreed and Nahash picked up the human he saw as his brother. They began heading for the village.
