Chapter 43: The Elf from Felarya   (ID #965213)

The elf followed Felix's directions and eventually came upon the body. The skeleton was sitting down, leaning against the base of the tree. The elf stopped upon seeing the skeleton and at first, all he could do was stand and stare in disbelief. There was a long moment of silence where not even the forest made a sound. "This can't be happening," the elf whispered.

The elf slowly took a step, and then another. He repeated this at a slow and hesitant pace, but he eventually made it to the body and knelt in front of it. The elf step the pack down as well as the weapons that Felix had taken from the dead body. The body had no belt or sheath. "The sword Felix found definitely came from this body," the elf said aloud, "And this is an elf's body." To the human eye, the skeletal frame of a human and an elf's looked similar, but to an elf, a difference could be seen. This elf knew that this was the remains of an elf.

The elf turned and saw a cave entrance. "If that's the cave system Felix and the naga used to escape Lord William's castle, it could eventually lead to the dungeons if one takes the right paths," the elf realized. He turned back to the dead elf and said, "You're the one who was sent to spy on Lord William. If that's true, you're the one I've been searching for."

The elf bowed his head and collected himself. He placed his hand on the body's chest and felt something under the coat. The elf opened it up and found a book underneath. No, not a book, it was a journal. The elf took the journal and opened it up. He glanced at the later entries and noticed that the elf that was once alive had written down all of Lord William's suspicious actions. The elf speed though the last entry which was cut off at the end. The sentence wasn't even finished. There was also no indication in the entry that he was in danger of being discovered. "What killed you?" the elf asked the dead body, "Judging by this entry, you died recently. You've even talked about him capturing a Felaryan naga. How can you be this far in decay?"

Of course, the skeleton couldn't open its mouth and tell the elf what he wanted to know, but the skeleton didn't have to. "Tell, me what happened to you," the elf said before placing his hand on the skull. The Felaryan elf had a gifted power that very few had. He was about to see the past of an object or a living thing by taping into his magic and touching the object of being. Well, it didn't work all the time, but he had to try. This situation depended on it. The elf tapped into his magic and focused on the date of the last entry, hoping he would see how the elf was killed.

Suddenly, night covered the sky and stars dotted the heavens. The elf saw a fire and saw an elf sitting by the fire writing in his journal. He knew this was the elf that was now dead, and elf named Melldor. The Felaryan elf walked over to Melldor and sat beside him. He stared at Melldor, hoping he would be seen, but The Felaryan knew that the magic didn't work that way. He touched Melldor's shoulder, but his hand phased through. The Felaryan elf sighed and listened to Melldor as he spoke a loud. "Lord William is becoming more dangerous. He's captured a Felaryan naga. I haven't seen the naga, it came in this afternoon, but I heard that it is a child. Still, Felaryan nagas could be considered the most dangerous creature around, even when it is a child. I don't know how Lord William plans to train that man eater, but whatever he wants with it, it can't be a good thing," Melldor said as he wrote the words quickly.

"I know the elves tend to stay within themselves and stay out of human affairs, but I'm sure that the elders will agree that Lord William is a dangerous individual and is gaining too much power. He's an evil and ruthless man. This could be trouble for the future of elves and humans. The elders have ordered assassinations of humans who they believed could become a danger of the balance of the world. Hell, they've done it to any sentient being who could gain the power to shape the world to their evil purposes. I'm afraid Lord William would someday become such a power and needs to be stopped before he can," Melldor said.

Melldor continued, "If that's bad enough, I fear that something worse is happening. I believe that Lord William is practicing black magic. I have very little proof, but there is something very wrong about this place. I can feel the presence of dark magic and-"

Suddenly, Melldor dropped his writing utensil and grabbed his heart. Melldor wheezed and screamed in pain. The Felaryan elf didn't understand what was happening. He tried to grab Melldor and help him, but again, his hands pasted through. he wanted to help, but he had no way of doing so. This was the past he was seeing and there was no way of changing it. Melldor stood up, but backed into a tree and slid down the trunk. His body began to deteriorate and his muscle and fat shrunk away leaving skin and bones. Melldor let out a final breath before a black mist escaped from him and left only bones.

The Felaryan elf knew this was dark magic a foot. It was a spell that drained beings of their life and magic to sustain someone else’s body, but Lord William wasn't even around. "He could have just taken the life and magic of anyone at random. The spell must have sensed Melldor and used him," the elf concluded.

Soon, he was back in the present. The Felaryan elf spent a lot of time digging a hole and burying Melldor with his bow and arrows. The Felaryan elf kept the sword and sheath and examined his sword and the sword of Melldor's. He read the words on both swords. The elven language on these swords doesn’t translate well in English, but the closest translation was this. On Melldor's sword it said "Blood Brothers" and on the Felaryan's sword, it finished, "always stand together".

Melldor was the Felaryan's brother. They had been through a lot together in Felarya and had somehow survived it. They had survived its giant predators and their lives as slaves to the giant race of elves in Felarya. They had made it to a world that was safer, but now he was alone and Melldor was dead. The Felaryan elf's name was Belgnir, and he vowed that he would find a way to avenge his brother's death.
