I wanted to know what this unknown second power was and hear the story behind it as I did not find anything unusual in grandma's diaries. I walked to mom and dad's bedroom to find her sitting on the bed, I had a suspicion she was waiting for me. "I knew you would come find me shortly after finding your grandfather's book." she said with a smile. "You are wondering what this second power I spoke of in the letter is and you want to hear the story behind it."
I nodded but did not say anything, wondering how mom could know how I had found the book. As if sensing my question, mom giggled. "There is very little anyone can hide from me, young lady." she said. "You father learned that when we met as teenagers, nearly twenty years ago."
"You... You were a part of the Problem Child Gang as well!?" stunned, I asked.
Mom smiled at me gently. "I was not a member, though I wanted to be." she replied. "I worked in the background, keeping my little brother, 'Tex' out of trouble."
I gasped, picking up the first addition. "You were the unknown Amazon!?"
Mom blushed at that. "I called myself Adrea." she replied, opening the first addition. "It was our first official case as we had before merely solved cold cases, we wanted more action." she sighed. "We got it..."
"Heather was out to buy film for her camera and she spotted two known drug dealers, loading a van." beginning the story, mom said. "She decided to take photographic evidence of their stash and the van's license plate before radioing the rest of the group."
"I remember that, she was caught while talking to Greg on the two way." filled with a renewed wonder, I said. "She was tied up, gagged, and tossed into the van with the drugs."
Mom nodded. "Greg knew she was in trouble and screamed into his radio." smiling, she said. "Tex heard it loud and clear on his own radio and ran from the house with me following." she sighed. "Sam picked each of us up and tore after the van, using a crude tracking device Sam had built into Heather's belt buckle."
"You all got into position and sprang into action." my eyes dancing, I said. "Greg threw a Molotov cocktail onto the hood of the van, causing the driver of the van to hit the breaks. Once he had stopped, Tex and Sam came running out and clobbered the driver and passenger."
"Greg then handcuffed them where they lied on the side of the road while Tex tore the rear doors of the van open with Sam opening the side door." thinking back to the real case, mom said. "There was someone inside, with Heather, and he was ready for them."
"Only so were you." smiling, I said. "A fist sized rock came flying in from no where and hit the man in the head, sending him to the floor of the van, out cold!"
Mom shrugged. "I was looking after my little brother." smiling, she said. "When the police arrived, they found the three men handcuffed to the rear bumper of the van with a note that stated..."
"Courtesy of the Problem Child Gang!" excited, I finished. sighing, I then added, "Dad said you and the others made real enemies, solving those crimes."
Mom nodded, turning serious. "As we solved one dangerous case after another, we began to think we were invincible." looking at me sadly, she said. "We learned the hard way that we were not."
"Your last case." whispering, I said.
Mom nodded. "I will tell you of your second power and the story of your ancestors." shedding a tear, she said. "Only I must first have your word that you consider your path in life carefully. We headed out blindly and were nearly lost."
What should I do?
