Finally, the kid blocking the path to Pettleburg moved and Keith was able to go on to the next city. Once there, he went right to the gym and requested a challenge to the leader, Norman. Unfortunately, his challenge was declined. "You see, this gym requires a minimum of four Hoenn League badges in order to challenge." Norman said. Keith was heartbroken. He thought he'd be getting his badge right away. "The closest gym from here is just north-west, in Rustburro City, and after that, you should go on to Dewford Town for the second gym." Norman continued. After getting directions, Keith proceeded to leave the gym to go to Rustburro City. But who should he happen to see, other than May?

Oh, hi Keith! Nice to see you again. You here to challenge my dad?" May greeted and asked Keith. "Huh? Norman is your dad?" Keith asked in surprise. May nodded. "Yeah, he's a specialist in the Normal type." May told him, "Hey, my Torchic and Wurmple are healthy now, you still want to have that battle? Still on edge to battle from earlier, Keith happily accepted. The battle was to be 2 on 2. Keith started with Whismur, May started with Torchic.

"Torchic, lets start off with Peck!" May began, fallowing which Torchic charged into Whismur and started pecking at it. Whismur took some damage, but shrugged it off. "Whismur, counter-attack with Uproar!" Keith commanded. Whismur began squealing and crying, making such a ruckus that both you and May had to cover your ears. Poor Torchic, however, had no hands to cover his ears and ended up taking pretty bad damage. "Keith! This is getting way too noisy! Torchic, use Ember now." May complained. Torchic, having taken enough damage to trigger its BLAZE ability, fired an empowered Ember attack on Whismur. Larger than usual balls of fire hit Whismur, knocking him out. "Not bad." Keith said, returning Whismur and sending out Wurmple. "Thanks, not so bad yourself there, Keith." May said switching out Torchic for Wurmple.
