  Chapter 41: apology   (ID #784841)
an addition by: David Argall  More by this author

Reluctantly, Pam clears your throat, and gives the ordered apology "I'm sorry, and I promise not to do it again."
"Very good." Sam judges. "Now it's your turn Gia."
You don't feel at all apologetic, and doubt Pam was either, but.. "All right. I apologize..."
"Good enough." Sam accepts the apology for Pam. "Now you two have got to learn how to get along. So for starters, I want you to take a step forward..."
OK, you do as told, and suddenly find yourself falling down. "What?"
"You tripped me!"
"No I didn't. You tripped me!"
"You are both wrong, and right." Sam announces. "You are both giving orders to your muscles, and since the orders are a little different, the result is confusion, and you falling down. So now you are going to have to learn to work together or you won't be able to do anything."
A silly idea in your view, and so you start to stand up. Unfortunately Pam starts to do something too, and your arm barely starts pushing you up before it moves away and you come crashing down the few inches you have gotten up. "Quit sabotaging me!"
Pam's response would likely be nasty, but since you have more to say, the two statements are completely garbled. "There, you see!" Sam intervenes before the dispute gets any worse. "You just can't do much if you work at cross-purposes. You are going to have to learn to work together. Understand?"
Reluctantly you nod, which turns into a double nod since Pam had started to nod before you had started.
"Now this isn't too hard to learn once you put your minds to it." Sam announces. "But you will need some practice. So now, just follow my instructions. On the count of three, put your hands flat on the ground and do nothing else. One, two, three."
You do as instructed, and this time your hands go into position and stay there. You are tempted to push yourself up, but recall Sam's instructions and pause. Surprisingly, you feel Pam doing the same thing. "Very good. Now just push yourself up. Don't try to move your legs just yet..." Again instructions are followed by both of you. "We are making good progress. Maybe too good. We don't want you getting too confident too fast. Well, now just move your right leg under you..."
He may have a point about overconfidence. You get the right leg in position and then start putting the left leg in position, and nearly fall back to the floor again. Only your stable hands and knees position saves you. "See Gia, you have got to act together. You try to act alone and you get nowhere. Now we move the left leg, on a count of three... One, two, three...
"Now you are going to have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Together again, right hand forward and stop..." The process continues, slowly, and with disasters when one of you forgets to move or moves too fast or without the other. But you are instructed on how to get up again, and set back to work. And you are developing an instinct for when and how Pam is going to move and can match her better and better. Pam seems to be doing the same . In fact you are able to take several "steps" without falling and without Sam's count.
"Very good." Sam announces. "You are still not ready to stand yet, but you have earned a reward..." Looking at Sam, you suddenly realize his equipment has grossly expanded, to the size of a baseball bat, a quite thick one. Not much doubt about what the "reward" is.
"Ah, that looks like too much of a good thing." you somehow manage to say.
"You'll be surprised." Sam answers. "Now just hold still as I get behind you..."
