"I don't know..." Ceres said slowly, gliding gently through the air before Derek. "How do I know I can trust you? I mean, plenty of creatures want to... well, capture fairies. You could just be trying to get to my village to grab some... well, grab us."
Derek shook his head. He just wanted answers, and Ceres seemed not to be giving too many out. After her initial bubbly introduction she seemed to become reticent. Oddly she seemed to be staring at his mouth a lot. Did he have some broccoli stuck in his teeth again?
"I just want to talk, that's all. Maybe someone else has heard of something like this happening before?"
"Well, maybe. But it's a lot of trust! You're going to have to prove that I ca..."
*SNAP!*
One second there was a twelve inch tall fey fluttering in front of him, the next a blur of grey shot past and she was gone.
"CERES!" Derek gasped, and looked to the right where the blur had gone.... right into a huge spider!
It was easily two foot wide in it's body, but it's legs spread to over six foot wide! Derek blinked as he saw two kicking, dainty legs sticking out from the beast's maw!
"No! Spit her out!" He gasped, and leaped forwards to grab her legs.
The Spider deftly scuttled out of his way, though not as fast as the blur suggested a moment before. It actually seemed a little dazed. Maybe whatever it had done had taken a lot out of it?
"No." a tinny voice said from behind him. "Not relinquish meal. Taste too good! It mine."
Derek slowly turned and saw two more spiders there, almost identical to the first.
"Keep meal. Earned it." One said.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw the first spider roll Ceres around in it's maw, mandibles manipulating her. It's jaw (if it can be called that!) was stretched really wide. The whole spider was only three foot in the body, and Ceres was a foot tall! However, slowly it gulped, working the fairy body inside, the legs gradually vanishing as they kicked. Curiously one of the other spiders made 'Mmmm'ing noises while the first swallowed!
"What? No! She's a person, you can't just eat her like that!"
The third spider tilted it's head to one side and stared up at Derek... with about eight eyes! Freaky!
"Yes. Can. See?" It said, and turned to look at the first one as Ceres' feet slipped between mandibles, the jaw gradually closing to normal size, the spider's torso bulging with the struggling body of Ceres. "She fits. Tasty as well. Mmmm!"
How can one taste what the other is eating? Derek shook his head. No! It was not eating the first friend he'd made here! He furrowed his brow and made his mind up.
