Welcome to the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I am Shannon and I'm your editor this week.

I'm King of the World!

I've always loved competition. I remember entering spelling bees as a child and how thrilled I was when I won. There's nothing quite like working your butt off for something and being recognized for your efforts.

I outgrew spelling bees a long time ago. Now when the competitive bug bites, I swat it into submission by writing (and occasionally winning) writing competitions. Spending weeks (or months) hammering out and perfecting a story, entering it in a contest and pulling off a win is an incredibly satisfying experience, and one only other writers can appreciate. You feel giddy--ecstatic, and you can practically hear the masses chanting your name.

Placing in a writing contest makes you feel like king of the world. It also boosts your confidence and makes you a better writer.

Comedy, horror, erotica, mystery--no matter what your specialty, there's a contest out there tailor-made for you. Even if you don't place, it's still a win-win: you're writing and perfecting your craft, and that's what writers do.

Now, your word is PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS.  And this time I want YOU to give ME the definition, country of origin AND use it in a sentence.

Just kidding. *Laugh*

What the heck're you waiting for? Those stories won't write themselves. Get writing already!

There are many contests and activities to choose from here on WDC. I’ve tried to include a wide variety here, so hopefully you’ll find something to light a fire under your muse.
