Always be nice to those younger than you, because they are the ones who will be writing about you.~~Cyril Connolly

Be kind and considerate with your criticism... It's just as hard to write a bad book as it is to write a good book.~~Malcolm Cowley

Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up. ~~Jesse Jackson

A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble. ~Charles H. Spurgeon

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. ~~Author Unknown

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day. ~~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you - not because they are nice, but because you are. ~~Author Unknown

What this world needs is a new kind of army - the army of the kind. ~~Cleveland Amory

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. ~~Dalai Lama

It is no secret that Writing.Com is important to me; a big part of my life. It is also no secret that I believe WDC is all about helping other writers, mentoring folks and learning to be a better writer. I remember the day I turned Yellow; it was huge for me and I was humbled and honored and one happy camper! Turning 'blue' was even bigger and scarier! I always enjoy when black cases I've become friends with turn yellow. I get a kick out of all the promotions on site. But bottom line for me is that we are a community of writers and readers; students of a craft. Case color has never been a denominator of skill. Time, involvement and giving back is.

I was horrified, ticked off and disgusted recently when I heard something from a fairly new yellow case. She was upset because another yellow case told her that, "Now that she's yellow, she doesn't have to bother with reviewing black cases anymore." --Or words to that effect. That is SO NOT TRUE!!!! Or right. Reviewing is a learned skill every bit as much as writing is. It helps writers learn about their own writing. Regardless of case color one should review pieces they like or can contribute to with some constructive criticism. It is about helping other writers and ourselves in the process. It isn't about being better. It isn't a reason for snobbery. We are a community.

My friend was very upset to be told what she was. It tainted her exhilaration at being promoted. She knew better, of course, but it saddened her that one could have that attitude here of all places. I suppose in any group there are always the naysayers, the disgruntled and the snoots. Guess it is the way life is. I am just saying that I'd hate for it to be a reputation that any newbie got from WDC because that, for the vast majority is NOT what we, as a group of people, are about.

On that note...let me segue-way to the Writing.Com Anthology. It will truly be the best of the writing submitted and we will have many excellent pieces to choose from. The call for submissions is open until the end of August. Thus far we are raising lots of gps for RAOK!! If you have submitted your (UP TO THREE) pieces already, we thank you. If you have yet to submit, do, please, consider doing so. If you lack the gps to enter, give me a holler...there are several folks onsite who will donate them to you so you can submit. You can also review your fellow writers and earn them that way as well!

There are quite a few of the long-timers here that we haven't seen yet and we would love to. Newbies, do not be intimidated. It doesn't matter if it has won a contest or not, we want what you think is your good work.

Thanking you all for your enthusiastic support! I look forward to seeing all your entries!

Christopher K. Miller questioned: I've placed pieces in a few anthologies. None have paid less than a free copy of the book, most 1-3 cents per word, and none cost anything to submit to. From what I can see here (beyond your overuse of exclamation marks), on the other hand, it costs something to submit to, and you get nothing as the author. Seriously? Did I misread?

I need to answer this. First off, this is a Writing.Com Anthology, giving WDC authors a chance to be published while raising gps for RAOK, a group that generously gives out upgrades to those who need them. We at Wynwidyn Press are donating our time and effort along with those who are involved with the choosing of the accepted authors. This is not about making money, a profit or getting stuff free. This is about using a cool idea and what I thoroughly expect to be an awesome anthology to give back. Consider the lack of free books or payment as a donation to a worthy cause. It is about WDC and Random Acts of Kindness, after all...oh and if I over-used exclamation points, forgive me for being super excited about this project.
