 Poll Question:

Which should be enjoyed first: the novel or the movie adaptation?

Hello, community. Polls aren't really my style, but I am faced with a literature conundrum which only my fellow writers and readers here can aid me with wisdom.

We've all read excellent novels whose popularity and/or quality inspired a slew of feature films. Memoirs of a Geisha, Lord of the Rings, Interview with a Vampire, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Kite Runner, the Harry Potter series, No Country for Old Men, and The Other Boleyn Girl are only a small fraction of these beloved books.

My general stance towards movie adaptations is 'see the movie, and then read the book'. My reasoning is that the movie can be, and should be, enjoyed for what it is. After that, we can delve into the richness that a book can offer without watching the movie for the first time with a chip on our shoulders. Let's face it. Who hasn't watched a movie adaptation without thinking Well, that's not what happened in the book. *Pthb*

So, what's the problem? Today I found out that in November Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Road is being released as a movie adaptation starring Viggo Mortenson as "the father". Upon hearing this my first instinct was to go out to my office, grab the book and start reading so I can get through it by November. It was after twenty-five pages of page-gobbling did I remember my mode of conduct of watching the movie first.

Now I am stuck with a choice. I want to enjoy the movie without picking apart every deviation from the novel, but at the same time I really don't want to wait three months before finishing a novel I have already come to enjoy. Please take a moment and select what you think is the best choice for my little mini-crisis.

I thank you very much for reading and offering your insight. *Delight*

 Poll Options:

Read the book first, and then compare notes with the movie adaptation.
See the movie first, enjoy Viggo Mortenson's performance and then relish the depth of the book.
Skip the movie and read the book. C'mon! What movie is going to do justice to a Pulitzer winner?
Skip the book and see the movie. Cormac McCarthy's blatant disregard for the basic rules of grammar makes my eye twitch.
Skip them both, pick up Twilight and get fanatic about its November movie release like the rest of us. *Bigsmile*
Another solution I didn't include. Please e-mail me your response.
