Dustin is a normal kid. He has a mom and dad, a brother and a sister, and friends. Just like everyone else. He goes to school, does his homework, with a lot of pushing from his mom, and aces all the tests. His friends are Kaori, a girl who was named after her aunt, and Clay, a young boy that is rejected by his mom. Clay and Dustin have been friends for as long as anyone can remember, but Kaori just met them about a year ago, dropping, literately, into their lives when she fell from a tree. Since then, the three have been inseparable.

But Dustin's father just got home from jail, and everyone knew that he came back different. He had a bad temper, and yelled at the kids a lot. He never used to do that. He also never used to hit them, either. But now he does. Caitlyn, Dustin's baby sister, had escaped beatings while Dustin and his nine-year-old brother had to endure a whole lot worse. Dustin tries to hide his battered and bruised body, but when people started asking questions, he had to brush it off as nothing.
