"
The Silver Locket: A Fairytale"

is a version of Snow White. I know, I know -- that's been done once or twice. The only thing I have to say in my defense is that some people get the point of this story and really don't like it. That's okay with me, though I'd enjoy having them like it.
"
Another Side of Light"

is about a woman, an artist, who's come to the end of life. It's based on my mom, to some extent. How a person leaves the world has everything to do with who they were.
"
To Sing a Common Poem"

is a story about autumn solstice, from the point of view of a crow queen. She doesn't think too much of us, but maybe the situation isn't hopeless.
"
The Lady That Bites"

is a kids' story about ladybugs. I happen to like insects.
"
Fall Colors: A Fable"

is about some dryads sharing beauty secrets -- and about leaves falling, and getting older. Maybe that's rather a lot for a silly little story, but there you have it.
I did a lot of research about the Ainu, the native people of Japan, to write "
Ainu Inheritance"

. It's more or less in the style of a folktale, told in a more or less modern style. It's a longer piece.
"
My Grandmother from Atlantis"

is about my grandma. I wrote it last Samhain (a holiday that connects the living with the dead -- Halloween for grownups, basically) to honor an ancestor. It's not well written at all, but I haven't been able to change it without messing it up.
"
I Am November"

was written for a contest, where the challenge was to write about November. Not a lot of entries to that one, as you might imagine... It's about the Oracle at Delphi, a subject I'd been reading about at the time.
"
Actually (revised 9/18)"

is a modern story, about a mom who comes to the end of her rope in trying to cope with her autistic child. The kid isn't the problem so much as the people assigned to "help."
I can't describe "
Bay to Breakers"

without it sounding like "Cathy Learns a Lesson" or something, which it sort of is, but I like it anyway. It's the most autobiographical fiction I've done. I really did run in a Bay to Breakers "centipede" years ago.
"
236 Words for Snow"

is a light-hearted look at snow, all in dialog.
These are stories about real experiences.
"
Snapshots from San Francisco"

[
13+] was one of the first things I put up, list of interesting things that happened when I spent a day walking around San Francisco. (Yes, it was a LONG walk!)
"
Psychic Gallery (Interview with a Ghost)"

[
13+] and "
Cancion de Rocio"

[
13+] were both written for "
Project Write World"

. It's hard to write nonfiction to a prompt! Canta muses about my experiences as an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor. It didn't go awfully well, so the whole thing bothered me, wondering why this lovely woman couldn't find a place for herself and her daughter in America. We think of ourselves as an open society, but that doesn't mean everybody will be happy here. The picture prompt showed a woman looking at an empty flowerpot. That sort of screams "infertility," but whatever.
"
Denali"

[
ASR] is something I wrote right after my dog died.
"
Those Little Stars"

is my ratings method.
