Amalia DeWilde, a newly graduated Governess who has yet to take a position, her older brother Nicolaes, and their childhood friends The Hawkyns siblings travel across the Atlantic to the DeWilde's newly built plantation in the growing colony of Connecticut. Their peaceful hopes are dashed by the harsh realities of their new found adulthood.

They are thrown into a wild and violent clash between the war-loving Pequot Indians and their own people. Due to their beauty and social standing; Amalia and her socialite friend Joanna are marked for kidnapping by a group of Niantic Indians who, subservient under the Pequot have hopes that they can trade the women to the Pequot chief in exchange for their small tribe's freedom.

The group of Niantic; led by a brave called Alsoomse abduct the young women while on a trip to the Isle of Mannatos (modern day Manhattan). Can the girls brothers find them before the war comes to a head and they all get caught in the crossfire?
