Erotica is one of the most difficult of written forms. It can be graphic, sensual, sublime, clinical or representational. It can be hetero or homo. It can be in your face or hidden in the most obscure of metaphors. A taste for it depends on a persons orientation. experience and imagination. What excites one reader is profane to another. What appeals to one nationality might not appeal to another. The broadness of its scope and complexity of its appeal is as rich as the diversity of men and women who all have experience in this subject. In the United States its influence has historically been see as corrupting and authors have tended to leave it behind the bedroom door. Where it has reared its head the writers have been typically male. In recent years however, largely as a consequence ot the French influence, female writers have come to the forefront and written some of the best examples.
