I first started working on the concept of the Seven Realms some time in 2002, at the age of 15. It started with no more than a raw concept for a story and a very crude idea of how the Seven Realms came to be, but it has since evolved into something much more defined and far greater than anything I could possibly have imagined at the time. The tale grew in the telling. Perhaps these words ring true not just for one particularly famous writer, but for any writer attempting to forge their own world. It certainly rang true for me. What started out as no more than an idea for a single story has become a world with its own mythology, its own history, its own people- more importantly, it spawned the foundations of two rapidly developing novels and a series of short stories.
The Ivory Tower has its roots all the way back in 2002, although much of the original content has since been rejected or refined as my vision of the world it is set in grew. The overall storyline remains the same, and the characters are still there, but many of the finer points have been changed. It remains sadly unfinished and while I continue to work towards completion the progress is painfully slow. I hope to pick up the pace soon.
Crown of Chains evolved into the Legends much later- some time late in 2007. It was one of the main reasons why I went back to working more seriously on the Seven Realms again, and so far it's coming along quite nicely. I'm no big fan of the working title, but as long as the project remains unfinished, it'll do.
Great Arcana came into the picture even later- early in 2009. It started out as a collection of short stories following the tarot's major trumps, but they wormed their way into the Legends anyway and are as real and true to it as the two major stories I'm working on.
Even now, the tale keeps on expanding, the Seven Realms keep growing, and their history continues to enrich itself. I have plenty of material to work with to start two more stories, but for now I think it would be better to focus on finishing the current projects. Hopefully I will have finished at least one of them by this time next year. Fingers crossed!
