For three years the small town of Kennebec lay nestled in a remote section of the Kansas Territory sheltering enough population to warrant its own overland express office and pioneer school, newly occupied by a bright-eyed young teacher... but one October night the town completely disappeared in a mysteriously bright light seen as far north as Russell. The sky boiled indigo, the earth shook and when dawn rose the town was gone. All that remained were a handful of survivors; a group of sisters, a half-grown Indian and an elderly man cradling a naked baby. They had been stricken dumb by their experience, leaving a mystery... a fable no one knew until now.
