Ireland, 1900-

Kiera Danaher has no concern for Dublin’s impoverished citizens, nor does she contemplate her father’s passion induced monologues over England’s stranglehold on their country. Kiera’s self centered concerns lay in her dreams of elite coming out parties and eligible suitors.

When her famous mother dies in childbirth, Kiera’s dreams of a wealthy suitor are dashed when her distraught father, Thomas Danagher sends her to live on her uncle’s farm in Killarney. A secretive uncle she’s never met. She despises farm labor and small town life and waits impatiently for her father to send for her. His letters are incoherent, ramblings of a drunken man, filled with traitorous anti-union writings that say nothing of bringing her home and grow infrequent as months roll by. Odder still- why does he sign every letter with ‘Your safe now.’
But even in peaceful Killarney whispers of violence and revenge trickle over the misty green hills. Secrets pass from one house to another and trust in your neighbor no longer comes easily. And one by one Catholic priests all over Ireland are being murdered.

The only person Kiera opens up to Liam Fitzpatrick, a handsome young farmer with a secret to hide. The tempestuous young man can infuriate Kiera with a mere grin, as well as provoke unwanted stirrings in her lonely heart. He is sought after by nearly every young woman in their community, though she finds his odd loyalty to her strange, for there is no way Liam could be in love with her.

Liam Fitzpatrick has his reasons for staying close to the beautiful young woman. Years ago when she first showed up, her father secretly paid Liam to watch her, to keep her safe. From who, he never said. Despite his growing attraction, Liam vows to keep his word. And wouldn’t she be safest as his wife? But Kiera scoffs at his arrogance, vowing never to marry a poor man-until she meets Liam’s older brother Sean, newly home from violent Belfast.

Sean, a Ship Wright by trade, doesn’t have the stomach for gun running for the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Wanting freedom for Catholic Ireland, yet war he believes is not the answer. During a bomb planting, Sean betrays his group and travels back home to his family farm. He’s had enough of death and dying. He wants to laugh again, and where better to do it than home. He’s heard so much of this girleen his brother has fallen in love with, he’s anxious to meet before they marry. When Sean inadvertently meets Kiera walking in the mist, both are overwhelmed by desire. Bells go off in his head. She’s the love he’s been looking for. But when Sean learns her identity, both know their love can never be.

Feeling a traitor to both his family and country, Sean returns to Belfast and the IRB and tries to forget Kiera. His punishment for desertion, he is given the assignment of killing one of the DerryCorry, an Anti-Catholic Order thought to be behind the killing of Catholic Priests. Sean’s own faction, the IRB believes they’ve hit pay dirt and found “The Odeflin,” the double spy who works both sides. His name they believe is Thomas Danager and he must be stopped.

Broken hearted, Kiera receives a strange note, saying her father needs her, she steals away into the night, thinking she’ll find him in Dublin. What she finds shatters her innocent world. Her family’s estate is now owned by an English lord, their money gone and of her father, no where to be found. Alone and broken, Kiera collapses in the rain.

Knowing the danger she might be in, Liam goes in search of her. Determined to locate the man who once placed his daughter life in his hands and to finally win Kiera’s love, Liam unknowingly sets out into the dangerous underground world of murdering secret societies, two factions on opposite sides, willing to destroy anyone or anything, including Ireland herself.
