Avoy, Georgia

1883

Thomas Milton is a college professor from Boston who has recently been caught in an "ungodly" act with his male student. Since homosexuality is a crime punishable by hanging, he escapes from the university and becomes a "man on the run" as the police put a warrant out for his arrest. Since nobody knows of his southern past, he heads back to his home state of Georgia, where he prays no one will find him.

Alistair Sampson is a wealthy farmer, whose wife has just left him after she catches him in an intimate way with a young, field hand. While buying supplies one day at the general store he sees an ad in the local newspaper from the town's newest teacher asking for room and board for the next year. Intrigued by the keywords, "unmarried," "male" "twenty-five-year-old," he decides to answer the ad and invite the man to stay with him. There are only initials for the signature, so he decides to reply in the same fashion. The thought of the "mystery man" excites him.

Weeks later at the train station both men are horrified to see the other. In their teenage days both men were mortal enemies. Thomas lived in town with his wealthy carpetbagger parents who bought Alistair's parent's home when they couldn't afford it anymore, resulting in a longtime hatred of the two.

Disgusted with the fact that he has to take Thomas in, Alistair makes the man sleep in an old barn with the chickens. Two days later a violent storm barrels through and Thomas is almost killed. Ashamed of the way he treated him, Alistair allows him to stay inside. The very next day, the two of them discover they each have an attraction to men. The weeks pass and they become closer, then finally lovers. Towards the end of the year, a student of Thomas' finds out their secret and tells his father. That night they escape into the mountains where they take refuge with the local Indians for the remainder of their lives.
