Bio:
I'm a retired newspaper journalist and long time SF reader working on a novel series titled "West World Rising" set in the late Roman Republic. Journalist never can get "ink" out of their blood and I have just taken on the responsibility of editing the PDG's Shadows Express-- "Shadows Express Home Page" . I am a "Rising Star" member where my sponsor is Hannah-Paper Doll Gang
.
Retired newspaper publisher and printer. Married to same woman since 1962. Started writing in 8th Grade, got serious 3 years ago and joined WDC and began learning new prose writing skills needed to turn out something besides crud. Working on a novel series now that's tons of fun. When not writing or in the chat room I play in the dirt at the community garden where we raise food for our local food bank.

Hannah's remembrances of Lyle:

You
always made me smile, no matter how down I was!

Smiling up at you now, Lyle~
I first met Lyle when he signed up for the very first class of Dolls, and little did I know that he would become a Jr. Leader in just days, then a Sr. Leader by month's end, and eventually my Co-Leader of the Gang, before he even graduated! I just had to have him as my Rising Star as his writing style really appealed to me. I wrote him this letter a long time ago in thanks: "
Lyle, Sticktalker, Sticky to me."

.
Lyle loved newbies, and he worked tirelessly to help them succeed by creating many helpful items: "
Articles for WDC members"

, I especially loved his "
OMG, I CAN'T REVIEW!"

. which is so typical of his great sense of humor! Here's a little letter he wrote to the newbies:
Sticky's letter to newbies
Dear Newbie!
First off, I'd like to personally welcome you to Writing.com.
Are you a little lost here? Confused about how the site works, where things are, how to create a new "static item" (where you display your story, poetry or artwork)? No idea what a "bitem" is or how to handle "WritingML code"?
Maybe you just have questions about how to create your bio, or what is a "registered author" or what does a member who has a "yellow case" or even a blue or purple case means?
Basically, are you wondering where to go for help and assistance?
I remember when I joined three years ago I was in your shoes. Then I discovered a new group called "The Paper Doll Gang". I know, I know, sounds a bit funny if you are a guy (which I am, BTW) but the Dolls (or PDG as we call ourselves) can help you get a firm start on how to use WDC to help you improve your fiction writing or poetry creation. More than 150 WDC members have gone through the classes...and many of those are now leaders in the Dolls as well as with other groups.
If this free class is of interest to you, email me, Sticktalker, and I'll pass it on to the Co-Leader of the Dolls, who will review your port and email you.
Again, welcome and good luck in your endeavors,
Lyle
I asked Lyle to write a graduation speech, and I shall always treasure it!
Lyle's Graduation Speech
What can I say?
The Dolls is open to any person with six months or less membership in WDC. I joined the Dolls with about a three-day margin. I think the main reason why Hannah allowed me to join was I didn't do ANYTHING after my August 08 join date until November of 08.
I'm retired and LOVE to explore and discover new things (my wife says I "pry" into everything) and WDC was no exception. I bugged the yellow cases at first, asking questions of them. I discovered the chat room and asked lots of questions there. I even met my first blue case there and then.. woot woot, I met a PURPLE case (I still IM her with questions from time to time)!
I had encouraged an online bud of mine, who wrote short pieces she called "remembrances", to join WDC. She did and within a couple of weeks she discovered the Dolls and talked me into joining.
I did and... woot woot, I was getting all sorts of help in discovering how WDC worked, not only from Hannah, but the other leaders who were running the various parts of the group. One was Cissy, who is the owner of the Native American Indian group; a group I soon joined for personal reasons.
Shortly after I had finished the "challenges" I got an email from Hannah asking if I would like to join the staff as a "co-leader" and help Cissy with the review board. I did and before I knew it I was hung in an interesting situation... both a student and a leader.
See, the thing is, I only could function as a leader because of the things that I learned through the Dolls. I'm very grateful for the chance to have been able to be both student and leader, it's been a wonderful growing experience for me...even if I DO sometimes forget to make an attachment to an email, or forget one of the student's first names. I have made a number of friends here whom I hope will remain in contact as time goes on.
It's been a filling three months...thanks Hannah!

Not only did Lyle share his love with newbies, but when our mutual friend, Cissy, became too ill to run the "
The First Peoples' Home Page"

, I took it over, and Lyle became my right-hand-man, creating many items to help make the tribe run smooth. He dove right in, and even went to a sweat lodge! "

Here is the banner he made for the home page:
Besides his love of newbies, Lyle was working on a novel, "West World Rising," which

has graciously offered to edit for his family, in the hopes of having it published posthumously.
His other "BABY" was "
Shadows Express Home Page"

, which Lyle took over and revamped in

's, the original creator's, absence. "
Birth of an e-zine"

. He poured his heart and soul into our gang's e-zine, and was so excited with the release of each addition. He was as equally happy to see others published as he was for his own self. That's just the kind of unselfish guy he was.
Lyle was generous-to-a-fault; nearly every single GP he earned was poured right back into our gang! When I first started the Dolls, I had dial-up, and not enough RAM, so Sticky spent $40, and mailed me 2 giga-bytes! Then I finally got high-speed Internet, and we shared many a laugh as I kept telling him, "I'm Fast! I'm really FAST!"

Of course, he knew that was all the more time I'd have to find more work for him! This image was our private joke about it:
Lyle is still with us, and smiling down as he just won 25% of the "
Novel Witing: 101 Raffle"

on a ticket I purchased for him. The funds will go to the Dolls, or maybe even to his daughter, Kim, who is considering joining our gang! That will be like having a little piece of Sticky!
In parting, I would like to offer my personal condolences to his wonderful Elaine, Kim and Family,
Lyle was so blessed to be surrounded by beautiful, caring and loving people like you. I thank you for taking the time to e-Mail me when all of you were hurting. I am so glad he had all of you to comfort him in his last days. May God bless all of you, and give you strength and courage to endure this sorrow, until you are reunited.
Good-bye, my dear friend, but only for a short while~
