I was a psychologist for ten years in the Texas Prison system. I worked at the largest unit in the system. It was an older, maximum security unit. We had about a 1000 inmates in Administrative Segregation, locked up all the time, and escorted in handcuffs anywhere they had to go. We had about 2200 to 2500 who were not so restricted. There was one senior warden and three assistant wardens and many majors, captians and lieutenants. We had an infirmary, but no beds for inpatient treatment, either for medical or mental health. I saw inmates for counseling and assessment individually and in groups. These stories come from that experience.
