*Reading*Flash Fiction




                   A story is only a glance
                   Into a character's nuance;

                   So perhaps it only takes
                   A single examined ache,

                   A sliver of life's cake,
                   A scene that unmakes,

                   Or gives us bellyaches,
                   Or pops us wide awake

                   Or curdles newsbreaks --
                   For us to see and understand

                   What turns one's heartlands
                   Into muddied quicksands,

                   Freezes a soul's wasteland,
                   Grows into dreamlands,

                   Or thrives in fantasyland.
                   One single such thought,

                   One bright, clear snapshot,
                   Can be our sole slingshot

                   Onto a story's sailing yacht
                   Departing for ports we'd never sought,

                   To places that define flash fiction
                   As streakingly fast depiction.
