Trelex, a huge International Conglomerate, had created an entire new race in order to create the perfect organic frame for a human brain: a new life form that would be capable of building the required atmosphere on Mars, thereby facilitating the colonization that was needed in order to exploit the huge resources held captive within the Red Planet’s crust. This 'short cut' would shave decades off the time needed to complete mankind's most ambitious undertaking: The complete terra-formation of another planet; making it capable of sustaining not only Gemma life, but eventually Human life as well, without artificial life-support or other aids. The Gemmas thought, spoke, loved and dreamed, yet they were chimera, created in a laboratory by human scientists and therefore considered subhuman by the majority of the human population.
