i'm thinking of a story where the man hates his woman and is planning on killing her. he almost succeeds in drowning her but at the last minute she floats to the top. He changes his mind after seeing how hard she struggles and her pleas of "why?"he then tries to rescue her but she won't let him, saying "you want me gone, then I'm gone. I can't live knowing you hate me" she drowns and he is left trying to explain how she drowned.
