I've never written for fun before, and I have to say I'm pleased with the positive feedback I've received. It's encouraging! So far I mostly just use writing exercises. It might be helpful to know that when I start writing, I have no plan. It's pretty much from one sentence to the next, so if you're wondering why characters tend to not have names/stories are so short/etc., that is probably why. I figure if I like an idea enough to expand on it, I can always add to it later.
