  Summary of this Book...

Mary Magdalene. George portrays her as the "apostle to the apostles." She seems to be Jesus's favorite, the first person he gathered in his cause. Mary grows up from childhood to womanhood, becomes possessed by demons, and her family kicks her out when she wants to follow Jesus and his proselytizing. She has no choice but to go with him, once her family abandons her.

The book then covers the major biblical events in Jesus's life, and this part of the book seemed to take away from Mary's life. The events were seen through Mary's eyes, but they were Jesus's events.

  I especially liked...

the description and setting. All of the book up until Mary's possession is engaging and kept me wanting to read on.

  I didn't like...

that some of the characters were not described very well, and it was hard to remember who was who. I also didn't like the fact that the gods of other peoples were portrayed as "evil demons."

I didn't like the cardboard characterizations once Jesus and the other apostles entered Mary's life.

When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...

read more books on the historical Mary Magdalene.

  This Book made me feel...

inspired. In spite of some of the book being boring, I felt uplifted as Mary came to know Jesus and learn his ways.

  The author of this Book...

has written other historical fiction books, on Mary Queen of Scots, and Cleopatra. I expected an epic novel of that kind, but this was not up to her usual level of characterization and interesting plotlines.

  I recommend this Book because...

it is uplifting, even through the sections I didn't care for.

  Further Comments...

If you like historical fiction, you will like this book. I liked this book very much, although there were a few places in it that I didn't think were very good.
