Lamott takes the reader through the process of writing, though I wasn't really aware of it until the end of the book. She writes to every writer's heart; what they feel when we write (the good, the bad, and the ugly), what writers ought to write as exercise, the neuroses we all carry in our pockets, and numerous other little sketches that will have me going back to this book again.
