Cooper Barrow is an American music student with a personal issue that drives him away from music for several years. At the beginning of the story, he has moved to Germany just before the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and is studying with a famed conductor with his own secrets. Cooper's story interweaves with Germany's story and we learn about the insides of the conducting world, as well as the lives of those most affected by the Wall; by both its rise and its fall.

Anyone interested in the inner world of orchestral music and/or the period of German history during the fall of the Berlin Wall would especially enjoy this story.
