NaNoWriMo starts soon!
November is just a little more than 30 days away and that means NaNoWriMo is just around the corner. Since many people use October for prep work, I wanted to drop this post now...
"National Novel Writing Month (NanoWrimo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30." ~~ NanoWrimo.Org
For those participating in this month-long writing challenge, Writing.Com hopes to provide you with the tools, support and inspiration you need to succeed!
If you're interested in joining a NanoWrimo group here on Writing.Com, here's a few:

You can keep track of your Nano word count in the left hand column of all your WDC pages. Once activated, just click the count to update it at any time! When you're done with Nano, to make it go away, set the count to 0!
Everyone can use the NanoCounter and if you've used in the past, you can reset it --> We encourage you to turn it on and get involved! But... You can only activate your NanoCounter using the following link. It will set the word count to 1 word so the counter shows on your pages.
---> Important! We will RESET all counters on or about October 31st in preparation for this year's nano. If you have a count in there when it happens, the system emails you a note with your previous count.
View the Nano'er List
Those who've got their NanoCounter turned on will have a link to View the Nano'er List. This is a complete list those members actively involved in the Nano. For each Nano'er, the list shows the word count written so far, words left to write and a percent complete.
Anyone can view the nano'er listing here:
The WDC NanoLounge
We've setup a place to chat about all things Nano. Share your stories, progress, problems, groups, forums, links and more! We've linked the lounge from the top of the Nano Authors list... and it's linked right below this:
NanoWrimo Merit Badges
Don't forget about our two Nano Merit Badges. They're in the Badge Shop under the General section: Nano Participant and Nano Winner
Merit Badges are great ways to mark occassions and acknowledge accomplishments within Writing.Com. The Merit Badge Shop can be found under the Gift Point Tools navigation menu... or access it directly at:

Pop-up: Begone! (when adding favorites)
With the new Updates page in place, we're already seeing members adding a lot more favorites. We noticed that adding favorites wasn't the most graceful process, so we've updated it to be smoother.
Instead of the annoying pop-up window, a small and less jarring notification area now appears at the top of your browser window to confirm your favorite addition. You can close it with the "x", or leave it alone and it will go away when you click to a new page.

|What is this "Updates" page?
Updates is Writing.Com's central area for member microblogging . By consolidating the Notebook posts of your favorite authors into one page, you can instantly see what's happening in your personal corner of Writing.Com.
Write an update of your own using the text box provided below. Update are automatically added to your portfolio's Notebook tab.
We encourage members to write Updates that pertain to their writing, activities, events, inspirations or general chatter. Please note, however, that members may hide anyone who they don't want to see in their update feed, so post responsibly and refrain from flooding your followers with annoying junk.
This area is open as a public beta. It's final form and implementation is subject to change and we are still working out some bugs.
Since there's no documentation yet, here's a few additional details:
If you Hide someone from your feed, you can unhide them by clicking the icon that appears on your Favorites list after you've hidden someone.
Along with the ability to hide favorites/fans from your feed, the system fully honors any "Block / Ignore Members" entries from your Account Options area. You can also block members just from posting to your notebook / commenting on your updates when removing or reporting a post.
More info and updates to come!
