| Complex Numbers A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number. The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi. Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary. Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty. |

I'm here at the tea house, just hanging out, pretending to write, pretending to be meaningful. I find there's a freedom in uselessness, a welcome detachment from all worries, cares, and responsibilities. A group of young men at the next table just toasted each other with their tea: "To a brighter tomorrow." Well, I've got news for you, kids: |

Thanksgiving again, which means it's usually time for me to list all the things for which I'm NOT thankful, just because I have to be different. |

I had the good fortune to watch two good movies over the weekend, one on DVD and the other in a theater. (A theater is a place where you go to watch movies before they show up on Netflix. You get to watch it on an enormous screen with wraparound sound, and observe the reactions of the two other people in the theater.)
(That is, Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz.) It's an art flick, so no explosions or boobies, but still a great flick. The theater one is worth seeing in the theater, or you can wait for DVD, but it's definitely worth watching. And the soundtrack is amazing. Pirate Radio Go see it if you get the chance, especially if you love music. | |||||||

So, let's get back to Music that I Like for an entry. Bonus: The lead singer, Paul Roberts, is also an accomplished painter. Most of their album covers, he painted. Here's a link to his art (WARNING! Artistic nudity): http://www.paulrobertspaintings.co.uk/ This one, especially, I don't know why it's not hanging in my house RIGHT THE HELL NOW (no nudity in this one; just awesomeness): http://www.paulrobertspaintings.co.uk/%2700%20-%20%2705/Red%20Riding%20Hood.html... So anyway, there's my Obscure British Band for the day. |

Every once in a while... okay, every damn day, I find something that's so funny that it makes me wish I'd done it instead of whoever actually did it. It's apparently from the Tonight Show? I don't know; I don't watch TV. But I sure as hell watch YouTube videos. The source I got it from, which is a blog that may be of interest to other folks who are into writing and/or photography: http://www.gfranks.com/blog/2009/11/3/universal-studio-free-photo-booth-lol-funn... |
