21.  ONE MORE DAY TO NANOWRIMO 2009!ID #674000

A Happy Halloween to all who celebrate it, and to all of us, a safe day and night!

Tonight at midnight commences NANOWRIMO 2009, so cook and freeze your meals, clean your house, shut off your phone, take an LOA from work *Smile*, kiss your children, and get ready to

WRITE!!!!!

11 days till UNDER THE DOME

Only two more days to wait, fellow NANOWRIMO fanatics!

And Stephen King addicts have only 11 days till the release of UNDER

THE DOME, and diehard Georgia Tech fans take note: the Jackets

play the Bulldogs on Nov. 28.

Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 AM on Sunday (2 hours after

NANOWRIMO begins)

What a month of excitement! Gee, and Veteran's Day and

Thanksgiving too *Smile*

Meanwhile, last night (interrupted only by riding along as the grandkids trick-or-treated, a very sparse endeavour these last 4 Halloweens in our TINY lil' town), I was riveted by accomplished author Terry Goodkind's newest,
THE LAW OF NINES

Now let me specify:
although I have long read reviews and seen Mr. Goodkind's many novels very highly recommended, this is actually the first time I have read his writing. My immediate response is:

WOOO! TERRY GOODKIND ROCKS!

With the first page he rocketed to the top level of my fiction-rating pantheon, and THE LAW OF NINES is now up there with Stephen King's DUMA KEY and LISEY'S STORY and all of P.C. Hodgell!

Mr. Goodkind can spin a tale that latches on to the reader and never turns loose. Had it not been for that pesky need to sleep in order to babysit today, I would have finished the 502 page book in one evening.

YES: it's that good!

Today raced through Audrey Niffenegger's HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY and very quickly through Ethan Brown's true crime, SHAKE THE DEVIL
Reading CORPSE IN THE KORYO, the first entry in former intelligence officer James Church's North Korean Inspector O series.
My take: Mr. Church is a REALLY smooth writer-I'm very impressed. The scenes are astonishingly descriptive. The characters are fascinating. Glad I acquired all 3 from the Library to read as a consecutive series. Highly recommended!

Reading Sarah Rayne's ROOTS OF EVIL. For some reason, although less scary than her A DARk DIVIDING, has already given 2 nightmares. NANO 5
Stephen King's UNDER THE DOME only 2 weeks!

and only 17 days till Stephen King's UNDER THE DOME

attended a NANOWRIMO Plot Development chat yesterday led by
Diane , who moderated the Character Development chat on Wednesday. Very useful, each.

Reading Sarah Rayne's A DARK DIVIDING, a wonderfully-interwoven horror novel with multiple perspectives (POV), eras, and exciting historical input (Bloomsbury at the turn of the century, and contemporary Bloomsbury), different locales (Bloomsbury, Shropshire at the Welsh Marches), and some of the very darkest aspects of the Victorian-Edwardian eras. Fascinating and as always, so skillfully written.

NANOWRIMO is so close now! October has just sped by.
18 days till the release of Stephen King's UNDER THE DOME woohoo!
HOW am I going to find time to read it during NANO? *Laugh*
I'll find some way: just skip sleep
Still uploading my NANO 2007 Project but hope to finish that today, then finish writing the expansion before November 1. *Smile*
Also need to start reviewing for 2 Novel Review Groups I just joined this week.

Attended a super-great chat on NANO prep yesterday right here on WDC-on character development. Will be a second on Friday on Plot Development. Very useful and shared some great character templates and character formation ideas among the participants.

Latest reading this week:
Sarah Langan, THE KEEPER
Sarah Langan, MISSING
Sarah Rayne, SPIDER LIGHT

11 days to NANOWRIMO! (Jumps up and down)
20 days to the new Stephen King, UNDER THE DOME, whose cover art wallpaper now graces my desktop computer. I've been waiting for that book for months it seems...the librarian told me in the spring,
"You can wait till November." My response: "No I can't." *Wink* I've been talking about the novel ever since and thinking about what it would mean if it happened to my community, a tiny little town across a wide river from an even tinier town.

Cliche to say a book kept me up into the night, but Sarah Langan's first novel THE KEEPER most definitely did. What a psychological horror!

Only 3 weeks from today till the new Stephen King, THE DOME, is released! Absolutely cannot wait!

Less than two weeks to go folks! Everybody who wants to participate and hasn't signed up, please scoot over to http://www.nanowrimo.org and get in gear!

Latest read:
Barbara Michaels, The Walker in Shadows. Ms. Michaels (aka Elizabeth Peters) never disappoints. In addition to solid characterization, a wonderful grasp of family dynamics and grief, we learn a ton about Maryland's Civil War era. Excellent book!

Now reading:
John Farris, Wildwood
Well, Mr. Farris never disappoints either, but this one is surprisingly fantasy-ridden, in addition to the contemporary issues, historical additives, pending horror & supernatural, and as always, excellent characterizations and dialogue interweaving with the subtle scaries.
