Shameful

A fine fourteen year old lad, Burton Winters, from Labrador, died on the Labrador Sea days ago. He was riding his snowmobile trying to find his way home when he turned in the wrong direction and ended up traveling out onto the frozen Labrador Sea, and then when the snowmobile ran out of gas he walked nineteen kilometers until finally dying on the frozen sea.

Now, I am sure as you read that brief summary of the unfortunate event that cost the lad his life, you were gripped that a young person like that has died, just as so many Newfoundland and Labradorians are. As well as our fellow citizens in the vast nation Canada, along with those from other parts of our world who hear of it.

The tinge of disgrace, and shame of discrimination, becomes evident upon hearing from the DND. (Canadian Department National Defense) The search and response that took place was atrocious. He died on sea ice, and the Canadian Rescue Helicopter was not sent out to help search for the lad for 48 hours, when there was on hand a search and rescue helicopter available. The excuses given would shake the heart of any logical intelligent person.

The excuse I heard from the Officer in control of that Base is the reason I pen these words. I was shocked to hear what the man had to say as an excuse why the boy was not searched for.

He said that, yes, there was a helicopter on hand, but he said it was important to keep it available in case there was an emergency that needed it. Yes, that is right, I did not write that incorrectly! He said that the helicopter was not used because it was necessary to keep it available in case there was an emergency needing it.

If the life of one of our citizens is not an emergency, what is?
