What shall we do, what shall we do, with all this useless beauty?

You'll pay for the distance between cruelty and beauty.

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2010/02/11/support_for_gays_in_the_military_de...

The poll finds 59% of Americans say they now support allowing "homosexuals" to serve in the U.S. military. But when the question is changed to whether Americans support "gay men and lesbians" serving in the military, 70% of Americans say they support that.

Why do you think this is? I can't imagine there are a lot of people who don't know that "gay men and lesbians" are "homosexuals."

We all know that sample biases -- including framing and question wording -- influence the result. But this is the sort of thing where you really wonder why. I grew up in a very conservative community, one where both terms carry the same negative connotation. I now live on one of the most liberal campuses in the country, where both terms carry the same positive connotation. (It's true. Being straight is heteronormative.) Are there really places where people see them differently? Hmm.
