RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! the key to a good setting is research, if you are to set a story in the 1800s then you must reseach what life was like then so that you aren't stuck with modern day things in the earlier years where they weren't even thought of let alone exist. For example internet will not have been used in 1812 no matter how much easier it would be to communicate.
