The Secret Garden

The air is rich with the scent of jasmine as the dolphins romance endlessly through a fragrant crest, a wave of white, hot pink, and morning glory hues. Contentedly the couple watch over their peaceful garden, smiling over their special place. A scrub jay greedily squawks and does his peanut dance (the shells of which are kindly left in the neighbor’s front yard). A miniature black panther slithers through the terra cotta jungle pouncing proudly on unsuspecting flies, then practices cat walks along the high narrows. Pinks and salmons, purples, reds, a yellow here or orange there, all brightly blanket a private green wonderland, the rainbow of my secret garden. A squirrel lounges lazily in the avocado tree after happily nibbling the young crop and safely hoarding stolen peanuts. Butterflies flutter by, wood bees helicopter sending the squeamish inside, humming birds hover, felines stalk, and large wolf-like rugs seldom move or bark but often wag and smile and they lay shaded in the middle of the walkway. All creatures happily reside in the small, terraced patch under the canopy of eucalyptus, pepper and umbrella.

At night the raccoons and opossums play. The ash filled pot-bellied wood burner glows. Kindling crackles. Guitars sing slow melodic love refrains. Perhaps a banjo twangs out a tune. Citronella candles flicker, and peace abounds.
