One Foot in Heaven
Heaven took me by surprise at Mass the other day...

One Foot in Heaven

For just one moment
Faint echo of exalted chorus
Breaks into my dreaming,
Veil rips, slipping,
As blinking,
Blinded by the Light,
I open sleep-encrusted eyes
And get a glimpse of heaven
Right here
‘Midst the drowsing crowd.

Can’t we see the throne and King;
Hear heaven’s voices blend with ours
As eternity, kneeling,
Praises One beyond all praise;
Taste the honeyed sweetness of
Feast hidden in Flesh and Blood,
His and ours?

Insensate, we drowse,
One foot in heaven
Yet oh, so lost in dream.
