Wearily I stretched out my arms and plopped my head on the desk. The teacher’s shrill voice, which had been entertaining at first, had now been replaced by the dull buzzing in my ears. It was only three weeks into the school year but in my mind summer was just around the corner. I just couldn’t stop thinking about the long, slothful evenings I had spent gazing with marvel at the stars. The smell of freshly mowed grass and lemonade seemed to still linger in the air, and I could feel the mud after a summer shower storm still drying between my toes. Realizing that it would be a good nine months, still, until summer would roll around again, I sat up and rubbed my eyes. Glancing at the clock I noticed that it was only fifteen minutes into class. Sighing in disgust I turned my attention to my teacher just in time to catch a few words about our next in-class assignment. After asking around I had finally figured out exactly what was assigned and could once again relax and dream about the summer days.
If there was one word to describe what I did for the rest of the class it would be stupid! Shortly after laying my head on the desk again I had fallen to sleep, a crime punishable by humility in the classroom. Now if Mr. Richey had been a kind, caring person he would have been like any of my other teachers and slammed a book down by my head. But, no, oh no. HE had to just leave me there not just throughout my entire class but throughout all of my other classes too. And like a cherry on ice cream, to top it off, every single student he had in his classes got to see me not only snoring but also drooling bountifully. Humiliation? Big time, especially when I woke up to the scowling face of our assistant principal. I was sentenced to a day in detention.
When I got home later that afternoon I found my parents waiting in the living room. Face beat red in anger I shoved my detention note into their laps and threw myself onto the couch beside them. I had expected a similar reaction from them, but you can imagine my surprise when they began to laugh uncontrollably. It was hard not to join in their amusement because the entire thing was humorous in itself, but it was also frustrating because I had been humiliated in front of the entire school and they didn’t seem to care. Torn between two extreme emotions I began to cry. Immediately my mom and dad stopped their laughter but continued to snicker. They tried to comfort me and tell me nobody would remember my incident in a few weeks but I could already name at least two specific people that would take pleasure in reminding me the moment I forgot. That night I pledged never to fall asleep in school again.
It wasn’t long before I found myself once sitting in my assigned desk in Mr. Richey’s room. To my surprise nobody seemed to make any remarks about my past performance, or had forgotten all about my little incident. To be continued...
