“The Schooling”

I fall asleep, and take my learning slow.
I seal my fate in what I do not hear.
I learn by calling up those who know.

We whine and think, “What is there left to know?”
I hear my knowledge enter and exit from ear to ear.
I fall asleep, and take my learning slow.

Of those questions in front of me, what are your answers?
God curse the Clock! I shall write quickly then,
And pass by guessing responses that I do not know.

Light is faster than Sound; but who can tell us why?
Weary students climb unending stairs;
I fall asleep, and take my learning slow.

Even a great teacher has another thing to assign
To you and me; so breathe the last of the outdoor air,
And, scholar, learn to work indoors.

This fearful shaking makes me sweaty. I should know.
Although halls lead away from here always, and are near,
I still fall asleep, and take my learning slow.
I survive by calling those I know will know.
