In memory of a friend.

My friend passed away on 9/11/2005.

THE HEART OF A HERO

The heart of a hero
stopped beating today,
when the pain of living
was all taken away.

He lost his last battle
but had fought a brave war
in a fight against cancer
for fifteen years, or more.

We grew up together,
were best friends you see,
enlisted as buddies
in the US Army.

He got out before me,
I stayed in for a while.
I met him years later
and he wore the same smile.

He always saw sunshine
even on cloudy days,
while lost to the eyesight,
he still saw its bright rays.

I was by his bedside
as he slipped away
and watched a true hero,
as he left us today.
